Research
RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
You’ve already done this in

‘Slow Dancing in the Dark’ – Joji
‘Starboy’ released by ‘The Weeknd’ in 2016.
I really liked the style of this music video, as I
think it uses lighting and colours really well.
The colours in this video look really vibrant, and
make the video stand out among others. The
mix of low light / night setting mix really well
with the bright vibrant colours and is a
technique I would like to use in my own music
video. The majority of the camera shots in this
music video are very still shots, but still have
the camera moving. There are some action
styled scenes where the camera is a lot more
hand-held and shaky which highlights the
anger and violence in the main subject of the
video.
‘Slow Dancing in the Dark’ released by ‘Joji’ in
2018.
This music video also follows a similar pattern
of the previous one. This video takes place at
night with a lot of vibrant colours. I think the
lights / colours look better during night scenes,
as they look more prominent and vibrant, and
also stand out a lot throughout the video. The
camera work is very slow in this video, which
actually correlates with the title of the song. The
camera movement is slow because it is showing
the artists emotions throughout the whole
video. The artist is also the only subject in the
video, which makes the audience give their full
‘In the End’ released by ‘Linkin Park’ in 2000.
This music video is very comic like as it mixes
the real world with fictional / fantasy worlds.
There are a lot of CGI scenes in the video as
well as fictional settings. The camera
movement in this video is mixed as there are
a lot of still long shots that focus on many
different subjects in the band. The colours in
this music video are also very vibrant and
quite unnatural, which adds to the fantasy
aspect of the video. The video is very
dramatic, with the weather even changing
throughout the video to highlight the
intenseness of the video as well has how
powerful the band is portrayed as.
‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’ released by
‘Green Day’ in 2004.
The style of this music video is very grungy
and gritty, which highlights the theme of the
song of feeling lonely and abandoned. The
colours in this video are quite de-saturated
which also highlights the emotions the video
is trying to give off to the audience. The
camera movements are also very tame, the
majority of the shots are still moving shots
with some hand-held shots, as the music
video is actually quite calming, even with the
band themselves slowly walking around
throughout the music video.
‘Heathens’ released by ‘Twenty One Pilots’ in 2016.
I really like the theme and location settings in this music video. The industrial /
dark areas really fit the tone of the song. Another thing I really like about this
music video is the low lighting. The low lighting also adds to the atmosphere of the
video and makes it seem all the more dark. Even with the scenes with a lot of light
are still dark which highlights to the audience that the artists are in a very dark /
unpleasant building that most people would not want to be in. The camera shots in
this video are quite tame. There are some long landscape shots in the beginning of
the video to establish the setting, as well as there being many close up shots to
POTENTIAL
TECHNIQUES
Editing:
Very monotone editing to fit the style of the song. (Relaxed & Simple)
Beats also mixed with the video, cuts to the beat of the song as well as
different speeds (Slow motion) at different parts of the video that fits
with the style of the song.
Camerawork:
Slow monotone camerawork. Low shots to fully display the subject.
Landscape & close-up shots of the subject to capture emotion as well
as sped up shots at different parts of the song.
Lighting:
Low light / city lights. Very vibrant synthetic lighting from nearby
building with lens flairs. Often creating light flares / out of focus light
shots when transitioning to another scene.
Production Design:
Outdoor city / town areas. Felids, roads and neighborhoods. Back alley
areas and industrial styled areas.
CONVENTIONS YOU
PLAN TO USE
My video will be centered around the pop genre. My
video will have lip syncing from the main subject,
however there will be some parts of the song where there
is no lip sync, and will be replaced with different shots.
The video will take a realistic aspect, with no
performance / dancing and will remain monotone, as it
fits the theme and style of the song I chose.
My video will also have a mysterious aspect to it, making
the audience question a lot of things once they see it, as
if there is something unnatural going on in the video. m

SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
- Adding various different transitions in post production
in different shots.
- Trying out different camera angles / shots to see which
ones work best for particular scenes.
- Different colours and lighting in different areas where
we shoot. Potential for a very vibrant yet dark video.
- The possibility of having natural moonlight in the video
as we are shooting at night which will really set the tone
of the video.
-Secondary background characters / little secrets hidden
throughout the whole video.
SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
- Potential weather problems snow, rain etc. Make sure
to find a day where the weather is good enough to shoot.
- Equipment failure (cameras, lights). A lot of shots will
be at night, so we have to be careful around equipment.
- Unavailable locations or time to shoot particular shots
in the video, as most of it takes place at night.
- Unavailable cameraman / assistants for hand held
shots where I am the subject.
- Making sure transition shots work properly. Learning
how to add professional transitions.

FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]

I chose this song because I think it works
perfectly with the style of video I want to
make, as my video is very monotone and
relaxing, but at the same time is very
mysterious and makes the audience think,
which is also the effect that this song has
on the audience. The song is very slow
paced which also fits with the theme of
my video. The song is around 4 minutes
long, and a lot of the shots are long, one
takes which takes up the duration of the
video. The colours of the video are also
very de saturated, which contrasts to the
theme of the song, as it is quite
depressing and slow paced. As for the
meaning, there are a lot of different
references in the song to suggest that the
main singer has maybe lost someone, or

FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
Synopsis:
A boy decides to go out for a walk on a cold winters
night, a lot of mysterious things occur / and an unknown
character can be seen lurking in the background
following the boy. The boy notices this mysterious man
is following him, and decides to run home. When the boy
arrives home and is about to enter his house, he looks
back one more time to see if the man is still following
him, then a sudden spontaneous gunshot is heard and
the boy disappears, vanishing from existence, and then
the video ends.
TASK 2 Pre-production
Assessment
GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINESummary of intended production
To create an interesting, meaningful music video with meaning.
Detail here what you are going to make and the intended outcome
I am going to create a music video about a man who is re-living the night he died,
this will not be stated in the video but there will be little details and hits to show
this, such as unnatural phenomenon's occurring throughout the video, and a
ghostly appearance of the main subject.
Detailed breakdown of the music track chosen and your interpretation of it
[remember the questions in the workbook, e.g. pace/mood/tone/structure]
The song I chose was ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’ by Greenday. I will be sticking
to a similar theme from the original music video, as mine will be very monotone
and slow paced, and make the audience question things they see. There will be a
lot of similar camera shots e.g. still shots, medium long shots.
Specific outline your intended technical/equipment requirements
For equipment I will only be needing my own camera, as it has an appropriate
lens that is good for filming night scenes, whereas a lot of the stock lenses are
really bad for shooting at night.
Include any details that you think [you could use material from your pitch]
One main detail I will be focusing on is lighting, I will be shooting in some well lit
areas, and some shots will be filmed in more darker locations.
LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access, cost,
weather? How will you manage this?
I will be filming in town & my neighborhood.
As my music video takes place at night, there is a high
chance of bad weather, which is something I will have to be
wary about, as if it is raining I wont be able to film any
outdoor scenes. The main way in which I will manage this is
by checking the weather earlier in the day, as well as trying
to find every opportunity to film when the sky is clear and
the weather is good. Filming in town will be a little more
difficult because of problems with getting there, as it will be
shot late at night, as well as the fact of dealing with the
general public, as I will have to find an area to film with not
a lot of people around. Filming in my neighborhood should
not be a problem, as the areas where I want to film are
mostly vacant at night, as well as there being plenty of light
and areas to shoot some specific scenes that I want.
EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly
from college, but who do you need to speak to get this
kit? What is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
For equipment, the only thing I need for my video is my
own personal camera, which is what I am going to be
using to make the whole video. It is important that I use
my own, as I have a lens that has the capability to film
during dark / low light scenes.
As for lighting equipment, the areas in which I will be
filming, I will be relying on the light already available. If
there is not enough light, I will be using a personal
photography light that I have to light certain scenes
better.
FACILITIES
Where will you edit your video? Do you need any other
specialist facilities…?
I will mostly (probably) be editing my video at college.
One problem I face when editing my video at college is
the software, as I feel more comfortable with the editing
software I have at home because I have used it more and
am more familiar with it.
I will be editing the transition scenes at college, as I am
not very good with editing transitions shots, so I will be
needing the help of my tutor. As for basic trimming and
editing, I will be doing that in my personal time at home.
PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
Props needed:
N/A
Costume:
Main character – casual style, jeans and jumper.
Background characters – dark colours, jumper with
hoods.
TASK 3.1 Visual Planning
PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
 Pre-visualisation and concept boards
 Storyboarding
 Shot list
PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEP
T BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
(Shots from Storyboard)
Verses – Shots 1 – 4
Song starts, slow moving / build up at the beginning of the video with
longer shots and slower camera movement with a lot of close up shots
to establish a setting and a tone as it builds up to the chorus.
Chorus – Shots 4 – 6
Multiple different quick shots, long shots to capture the setting /
location and some close ups to capture emotion on the main characters
face, longer still shot as the chorus fades out back into the verse.
Verses – Shots 7 – 9
The tone of the video is calmer once again, there are a lot more still
shots, as well as longer tracking shots. The video starts to unfold more
as it is telling a story.
Chorus – Shots 10 – 12
More dramatic shots once again, leading on very suspenseful moments
in the video with a lot of quick cuts and shaky camera movement. As
the music is nearly finished, the song will end abruptly, and there will
be one lingering camera shot that will fade to black.
TASK 3.2 Organisational
Planning
PRODUCTION GROUP

Include names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is
suggested

with a small path and road, as well as a clearing to a
small wooded area without houses.
3rd Location:
A pond / park area with a wooden bridge surrounded by
trees and fields. The scene will take place around a
wooden bench.
RISK ASSESSMENT
Possible Risk / Hazards Solutions
Rain / weather can equal to
damaged equipment.
Check weather to make sure it
is clear and not rainy.
Filming at night, tripping over
and breaking equipment.
Make sure to film in well lit
areas where you can see clearly.
Filming around a small body of
water at night.
Be careful around the water,
stay a reasonable distance
away.
Acting in very low light areas, risk
of tripping causing an injury.
Always try to be aware of your
surroundings and keep in well
lit areas.
CONTINGENCY PLAN
Main Areas What Could Go Wrong
Technical Equipment failure is a possibility as well
as post production problems like loss
of footage, corrupt videos, audio
problems and software crashes.
Location Mostly N/A, however there could be a
problem with shooting at late times as
a lot of it takes place at night so people
might not be available.
Personnel Unavailable helpers, cameraman etc. As
well as problems that may get in the
way of my availability, e.g. not being
available one day.

  • 9. ‘Starboy’ released by ‘The Weeknd’ in 2016. I really liked the style of this music video, as I think it uses lighting and colours really well. The colours in this video look really vibrant, and make the video stand out among others. The mix of low light / night setting mix really well with the bright vibrant colours and is a technique I would like to use in my own music video. The majority of the camera shots in this music video are very still shots, but still have the camera moving. There are some action styled scenes where the camera is a lot more hand-held and shaky which highlights the anger and violence in the main subject of the video. ‘Slow Dancing in the Dark’ released by ‘Joji’ in 2018. This music video also follows a similar pattern of the previous one. This video takes place at night with a lot of vibrant colours. I think the lights / colours look better during night scenes, as they look more prominent and vibrant, and also stand out a lot throughout the video. The camera work is very slow in this video, which actually correlates with the title of the song. The camera movement is slow because it is showing the artists emotions throughout the whole video. The artist is also the only subject in the video, which makes the audience give their full
  • 10. ‘In the End’ released by ‘Linkin Park’ in 2000. This music video is very comic like as it mixes the real world with fictional / fantasy worlds. There are a lot of CGI scenes in the video as well as fictional settings. The camera movement in this video is mixed as there are a lot of still long shots that focus on many different subjects in the band. The colours in this music video are also very vibrant and quite unnatural, which adds to the fantasy aspect of the video. The video is very dramatic, with the weather even changing throughout the video to highlight the intenseness of the video as well has how powerful the band is portrayed as. ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’ released by ‘Green Day’ in 2004. The style of this music video is very grungy and gritty, which highlights the theme of the song of feeling lonely and abandoned. The colours in this video are quite de-saturated which also highlights the emotions the video is trying to give off to the audience. The camera movements are also very tame, the majority of the shots are still moving shots with some hand-held shots, as the music video is actually quite calming, even with the band themselves slowly walking around throughout the music video.
  • 11. ‘Heathens’ released by ‘Twenty One Pilots’ in 2016. I really like the theme and location settings in this music video. The industrial / dark areas really fit the tone of the song. Another thing I really like about this music video is the low lighting. The low lighting also adds to the atmosphere of the video and makes it seem all the more dark. Even with the scenes with a lot of light are still dark which highlights to the audience that the artists are in a very dark / unpleasant building that most people would not want to be in. The camera shots in this video are quite tame. There are some long landscape shots in the beginning of the video to establish the setting, as well as there being many close up shots to
  • 12. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES Editing: Very monotone editing to fit the style of the song. (Relaxed & Simple) Beats also mixed with the video, cuts to the beat of the song as well as different speeds (Slow motion) at different parts of the video that fits with the style of the song. Camerawork: Slow monotone camerawork. Low shots to fully display the subject. Landscape & close-up shots of the subject to capture emotion as well as sped up shots at different parts of the song. Lighting: Low light / city lights. Very vibrant synthetic lighting from nearby building with lens flairs. Often creating light flares / out of focus light shots when transitioning to another scene. Production Design: Outdoor city / town areas. Felids, roads and neighborhoods. Back alley areas and industrial styled areas.
  • 13. CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN TO USE My video will be centered around the pop genre. My video will have lip syncing from the main subject, however there will be some parts of the song where there is no lip sync, and will be replaced with different shots. The video will take a realistic aspect, with no performance / dancing and will remain monotone, as it fits the theme and style of the song I chose. My video will also have a mysterious aspect to it, making the audience question a lot of things once they see it, as if there is something unnatural going on in the video. m

  • 15. SUMMARY 5 opportunities of your ideas - Adding various different transitions in post production in different shots. - Trying out different camera angles / shots to see which ones work best for particular scenes. - Different colours and lighting in different areas where we shoot. Potential for a very vibrant yet dark video. - The possibility of having natural moonlight in the video as we are shooting at night which will really set the tone of the video. -Secondary background characters / little secrets hidden throughout the whole video.
  • 16. SUMMARY 5 restrictions to your ideas - Potential weather problems snow, rain etc. Make sure to find a day where the weather is good enough to shoot. - Equipment failure (cameras, lights). A lot of shots will be at night, so we have to be careful around equipment. - Unavailable locations or time to shoot particular shots in the video, as most of it takes place at night. - Unavailable cameraman / assistants for hand held shots where I am the subject. - Making sure transition shots work properly. Learning how to add professional transitions.

  • 18. FINAL IDEA – TRACK SUMMARY Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content, duration, pace and style of the song] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Soa3 gO7tL-c I chose this song because I think it works perfectly with the style of video I want to make, as my video is very monotone and relaxing, but at the same time is very mysterious and makes the audience think, which is also the effect that this song has on the audience. The song is very slow paced which also fits with the theme of my video. The song is around 4 minutes long, and a lot of the shots are long, one takes which takes up the duration of the video. The colours of the video are also very de saturated, which contrasts to the theme of the song, as it is quite depressing and slow paced. As for the meaning, there are a lot of different references in the song to suggest that the main singer has maybe lost someone, or Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Greenday – Released in 2004.
  • 19. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre conventions, etc] Synopsis: A boy decides to go out for a walk on a cold winters night, a lot of mysterious things occur / and an unknown character can be seen lurking in the background following the boy. The boy notices this mysterious man is following him, and decides to run home. When the boy arrives home and is about to enter his house, he looks back one more time to see if the man is still following him, then a sudden spontaneous gunshot is heard and the boy disappears, vanishing from existence, and then the video ends.
  • 21. GUIDANCE: PRE-PRODUCTION ASSESSMENT You need to assess the viability of your production and investigate what is required to enable you to make your music video Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will need to investigate standard costings for such a production and apply these to your planned production considering which equipment you would need and resources, etc Resources to support this are in the Pre-production assessment folder on Blackboard Delete the questions on each slide and insert your responses
  • 22. TITLE OF PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI ON OUTLINESummary of intended production To create an interesting, meaningful music video with meaning. Detail here what you are going to make and the intended outcome I am going to create a music video about a man who is re-living the night he died, this will not be stated in the video but there will be little details and hits to show this, such as unnatural phenomenon's occurring throughout the video, and a ghostly appearance of the main subject. Detailed breakdown of the music track chosen and your interpretation of it [remember the questions in the workbook, e.g. pace/mood/tone/structure] The song I chose was ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’ by Greenday. I will be sticking to a similar theme from the original music video, as mine will be very monotone and slow paced, and make the audience question things they see. There will be a lot of similar camera shots e.g. still shots, medium long shots. Specific outline your intended technical/equipment requirements For equipment I will only be needing my own camera, as it has an appropriate lens that is good for filming night scenes, whereas a lot of the stock lenses are really bad for shooting at night. Include any details that you think [you could use material from your pitch] One main detail I will be focusing on is lighting, I will be shooting in some well lit areas, and some shots will be filmed in more darker locations.
  • 23. LOCATIONS You need to identify locations and plan a recce. What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access, cost, weather? How will you manage this? I will be filming in town & my neighborhood. As my music video takes place at night, there is a high chance of bad weather, which is something I will have to be wary about, as if it is raining I wont be able to film any outdoor scenes. The main way in which I will manage this is by checking the weather earlier in the day, as well as trying to find every opportunity to film when the sky is clear and the weather is good. Filming in town will be a little more difficult because of problems with getting there, as it will be shot late at night, as well as the fact of dealing with the general public, as I will have to find an area to film with not a lot of people around. Filming in my neighborhood should not be a problem, as the areas where I want to film are mostly vacant at night, as well as there being plenty of light and areas to shoot some specific scenes that I want.
  • 24. EQUIPMENT What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly from college, but who do you need to speak to get this kit? What is available? When? Look at equipment hire places, etc For equipment, the only thing I need for my video is my own personal camera, which is what I am going to be using to make the whole video. It is important that I use my own, as I have a lens that has the capability to film during dark / low light scenes. As for lighting equipment, the areas in which I will be filming, I will be relying on the light already available. If there is not enough light, I will be using a personal photography light that I have to light certain scenes better.
  • 25. FACILITIES Where will you edit your video? Do you need any other specialist facilities…? I will mostly (probably) be editing my video at college. One problem I face when editing my video at college is the software, as I feel more comfortable with the editing software I have at home because I have used it more and am more familiar with it. I will be editing the transition scenes at college, as I am not very good with editing transitions shots, so I will be needing the help of my tutor. As for basic trimming and editing, I will be doing that in my personal time at home.

  • 27. TASK 3.1 Visual Planning
  • 28. PRE-PRODUCTION: VISUAL PLANNING This section is concerned with the visual planning of your music video You should use this section to develop the sequencing or your video, establish the relationship between the visuals and the track itself and create a structure for you to follow when filming It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before you make it; it will make filming and production a more streamlined process The following tasks are part of your visual planning  Pre-visualisation and concept boards  Storyboarding  Shot list
  • 29. PRE- VISUALISATION/CONCEP T BOARDS Tool for exploring the direction and visuals Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel” Presents key moments in your video A means to sketch/plan ideas Information on colour/lighting Defining the “mise-en-scene” Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the production, the following slides have been left blank for you to approach in your own way, add more as you need to Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this: http://io9.com/5941145/this-directors-video-pitch-for- hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
  • 33. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN (Shots from Storyboard) Verses – Shots 1 – 4 Song starts, slow moving / build up at the beginning of the video with longer shots and slower camera movement with a lot of close up shots to establish a setting and a tone as it builds up to the chorus. Chorus – Shots 4 – 6 Multiple different quick shots, long shots to capture the setting / location and some close ups to capture emotion on the main characters face, longer still shot as the chorus fades out back into the verse. Verses – Shots 7 – 9 The tone of the video is calmer once again, there are a lot more still shots, as well as longer tracking shots. The video starts to unfold more as it is telling a story. Chorus – Shots 10 – 12 More dramatic shots once again, leading on very suspenseful moments in the video with a lot of quick cuts and shaky camera movement. As the music is nearly finished, the song will end abruptly, and there will be one lingering camera shot that will fade to black.

  • 37. RISK ASSESSMENT Possible Risk / Hazards Solutions Rain / weather can equal to damaged equipment. Check weather to make sure it is clear and not rainy. Filming at night, tripping over and breaking equipment. Make sure to film in well lit areas where you can see clearly. Filming around a small body of water at night. Be careful around the water, stay a reasonable distance away. Acting in very low light areas, risk of tripping causing an injury. Always try to be aware of your surroundings and keep in well lit areas.
