MUSIC VIDEO
ASSIGNMENT 2
LUCAS HIGHAM
GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the relevant elements
you need to cover in your Music Video Assignment
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and share it with your
group so you always have a copy – some sections require you to delete
the information on the slide and replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you should be doing
this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress through the pre-
production phase.
Delete this slide when complete
TASK 1 Idea Generation and
Research
RESEARCH & IDEA GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles, techniques
and conventions that we have looked at in previous sessions. Explore
how you could interpret the song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images, mind maps,
etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate these
RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started, make note of a
minimum of 5 – add extra slides, screenshot the video and in bullet
point note down info in terms of camera, editing, art design,
performance, etc and how this might link to your production
Hint!
You’ve already done this in your
case study, so you can summarise
that here where relevant
• VAMPIRE WEEKEND- A-PUNK
Vampire Weekend- A-Punk
▪ Over/under cranking (do everything slowly then speed it up in post, synched with song. Vice-versa for slow motion).
▪ MV Conventions: Simulated performance
▪ Single take, technique!
▪ Link between what's on screen and the song, they play off each other.
▪STORMZY– VASSI BOP
STORMZY– VASSI BOP
▪ Very slick
▪ Smooth. seamless transitions
▪ Camera always moving, always something going on, draws the viewer in, rewatchable, high production value.
▪ Synchronised dancing, eye catching, good choreography
▪ Opening shot: low angle- Stormzy dominant figure
▪ Stormzy very drawing, prominent, in centre stage
Behind the houses of parliament- contextual
At beginning, just Stormzy,
the video builds, more

HOT CHIP- I FEEL BETTER
Hot Chip- I Feel Better
▪Subverts expectations of a cringe boy band music video, plays on our previous knowledge on the
tropes and style of boy band music videos.
▪Again, a simulated performance.
▪Flat lighting- no dimensions or shadows.
▪Turns very strange, overall message is to show how bad boy bands are, and the actual band (hot
chip) wanting to distinguish themselves as something else.
Madonna – Vogue
Very slick and smooth, the camera is stable as it glides through the models imitating the statues.
Uses the basic conventions we expect from a music video, lip syncing, cut to the beat, synchronised
dance but with style, everyone being well lit, in the spotlight evoking status and power.
At the end of the music video the models are all dancing together,in contrast to the start where they
are stood still, almost like they've been awakened- this adding to Madonna's image of powerful and
glamorous.
BEASTIE BOYS - INTERGALACTIC
▪ Very bizarre high energy, draws viewer in, makes them invested in the video, therefore the
runtime flies by. High production value (big practical models, similar to power rangers, meant to
look practical- yet shot gritty, time-lapse, fisheye shots, on location shooting, fast
edits. Entertaining story being told, narrative driven. Brokennarrative, singing to camera
(chorus) song is repetitive, the structure is repetitive. Creates expectation we understand the
structure quickly, so we come to expect the narrative to resolve. Music video convention, low
angle shots, we are looking up at them, they come down from a spaceship, other worldly
presence. Over/undercranking, adding to the high energy absurd nature of the video. Costume
design- eye catching, colourful, unique, not a typical costume you would see the artistic wearing
in a music video, howeverit fits the style.

MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
Listening in, putting the jigsaw
together of his life. Ideas
Past and present
cut together.
Present: lonely, cold,
dark, listening in on his life
and others? All in his head.
Past love, beating heart of the
flashback part of the narrative
His past crime life, coming to
terms with his sins
Towards end, strobe lighting,
centre faming, in his head
The whole thing takes place in his
mind: layer 1- process of
rememberingvisually shown through
listening device: layer3- finding the
key, time-lapse: layer3- his
memories.
CINEMATIC
SUMMARY – OPPORTUNITIES
1) Use colour to represent certain events and emotions. This also creates a
more visually pleasing aesthetic
2) Almost constant camera movement, builds and gets quicker over the course
of the video.
3) Intercutting between memoriesand the mind, play around with audio
possibly?? Opportunity to have smooth transitions between memoriesand
mind, match cuts, Don’t look now style.
4) Use a long time-lapse intercut throughout of the camera going through his
town, at the end finally finds 'the key' to come to terms with accepting his sins.
His love.
5) cut to the beat of the song, nice pace and flow.
SUMMARY – RESTRICTIONS
1) The colours used could be misinturpited, may not be bright enough
therefore not filling the room or location. Could be distracting or overused.
2) The constant movement could be cause unstable in the camera, too shaky
and unclear. Need to plan a clear path and make sure camera is on rig
properly.
3) Could become convoluted and a possible challenge to edit. Lots of clips,
could make it too much for the software.
4) Filming time-lapse could take a very long time walking around town with
camera (must be kept stable, not shaking) the SD card could run out of
storage, run out of time. Something unexpected could happen, multiple
takes. Time consuming.
5) Won't always cut to the beat, as would limit the shot use and long takes,
but definitely will, add to flow.
FINAL IDEA – ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Jigsaw Falling into Place / Radiohead
British rock group that was arguably the most accomplished art-rock
band of the early 21st century. This revered quintet made some of the
most majestic—if most angst-saturated—music of the postmodern era.
Formed in the mid-1980s at Abingdon School in Oxfordshire.
Cold Play David Bowie
Experimental, art-rock
FINAL IDEA – TRACK SUMMARY –
JIGSAW FALLING INTO PLACE
Jigsaw falling into place is semi-autobiographical, based on the bands
(radiohead)messy drunken nights, that the band fondly rememberfrom their
university days.
The pace of the song starts off slow and moody, with the first 58 seconds of
the song just being music and humming. Soon it picks up, to be quite fast
paced and loud, then abrubley ends. If we consider the subtext of the band's
inspiration for the song, the pace nicely matches. The night usually starts off
slow and quiet, with maybe a few drinks. But later in, the drinks are more
frequent and heavy, everything gets louder and hazy, and then it ends, you
find yourself waking up trying to remember what happened.
FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
In a nutshell my video synopsis: a troubled ex-criminal attempts to reflect and
come to terms with his past from the horrible crimes and his dead lover.
I will convey this through filming everything in his mind. The reason why he's sat
listening in is to visually show him trying to remember these events in a unquie
way, rather than him just stood in real time thinking.
The song I'm using (jigsaw falling into place) is experimental, so I'm going
to make my video experimental, using interesting and different techniques.
TASK 2 Pre-production Assessment
GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and investigate
what is required to enable you to make your music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will need to
investigate standard costings for such a production and apply these to
your planned production considering which equipmentyou would need
and resources, etc
Resourcesto support this are in the Pre-production assessment folder
on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your responses
LOCATIONS
Helmsley, shooting on the streets, the square, the suburbs. When shooting out in the open,
possible limitations of unexpected public interference, weather conditions, safety regarding
cars.
We will film on a dry day, however if the weather forecast is wrong another day will be
chosen as our backup. On the other hand, the rain and weather could add to the atmosphere
of the video and work to my advantage.
I also need a clear space for a desk, tv monitors, sound board, and other set dressing. The
space surrounding it will be pitch black, the only light coming from the monitor and lap. This
space will be my bedroom.
Restaurant, is where I work so will get permission from the boss. Will shoot during closing time
from 3 to around half past 4, as they reopen for dinner service at 5. So time is LIMITED, move
fast and plan.
Abandoned buliding, slightly dangerous to enter however not impossible if done properly. Will
inspect the area before shoot, clear out sharp spikes, thorns, or bushes. Cast and crew will have
to dress appropriately to limit any injuries.
Town square VERY busy in the day, film
late afternoon to limit public interference.
Allow enough time to avoid filming in the
dark
EQUIPMENT
Canon 200D, main camera. Will have 2 fully charged batteries, of course having 2 in case the other one dies. NumerousSD
cards so I will not run out of storage.
Canon 1300D (back up camera) again multiple batteries
Wide angle lens 10-18mm
Tri-pod
Dolly to connect to the feet of tri-pod, smooth movement on smooth ground.
Camera stabiliser, handheld shots more stable, not having to touch the camera, no added noise of hands on the camera or
breathing from camera operator.
Cover for Camera, in case it rains to protect camera from damages.
LED Lighting kit, with coloured filters. With them I have batteries, so the lights are portable to other locations, if the batteries run
out or fail on me, hopefully a plug point will be nearby, however that limits the flexibility of the lighting, depending on the plug
point.
Slider PLUS, attach to the tri-pod to get a nice push it/push out/slide left or right, a better dolly basically.
Backpack to store most equipment and transport easily.
Smoke machine (possibly)
All equipment is my own.
FACILITIES
Editing will take place at college using adobe premiere pro. Premiere
pro is a professional software with many features that will allow me to
enhance my music video, we must also use this when editing. I've used
a few times before however this video will be the first proper time; I
use the software to edit a project.
PERSONNEL
Crew: Lucas (me) as director, Jack camera operator.
Cinematographer strengths: doing the same course, so will be on the same page. Since they're new
to cameras, might offer a different perspective.
Weaknesses: may not have the patience to work with director and get the perfect shot, no matter
how long it will take. Relativley new to cameras and filmmaking, so will need guidance on how to
use camera and what type of shot I want to achieve.
Won't have a sense of urgency or time to complete the shoot without going over schedule.
Cast: Abi as young woman. Lucas (me) as young man.
Background extra for certain segments: TBC
In total 4 membersof personnel.
I'm available all the time, the production will be based at my house.
Abi lives in the next village along, 3 minuet car journey at best, my mum shall collect her and bring
her back. Jack lives in Helmsley, so he can just walk to my house.
PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
Prop list: handguns (fake), headphones
Set dressing: desk, monitors, sound board, papers, generic desk
supplies, pictures and files related to the character, everything else is
on location shooting.
Costume: young man: rugged tatty coat, black tie, white shirt, thick
glasses frame. Young woman: stable colours, light pink or white.
SEGMENTS OF MUSIC VIDEO
Layer 1: visual metaphor for searching and unlocking the memories,
young man sat listening to them, watching them in a dark smokey
room, alone.
Layer 2: memories-intimate moments with young woman (on location,
at a park, forest, streets) planning robbery (abandoned house),
arguments with young woman, actual robbery (restaurant), escaping
running.
Layer 3: time-lapse through town, ending with the young woman.
TASK 3.1 Visual Planning
PRE-PRODUCTION: VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or your video,
establish the relationship between the visuals and the track itself and
create a structure for you to follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before you make it; it
will make filming and production a more streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
 Pre-visualisation and concept boards
 Storyboarding
 Shot list
PRE-VISUALISATION/CONCEPT BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the production,
the following slides have been left blank for you to approach in your own
way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have inspired or
influenced your video [similar to this: http://io9.com/5941145/this-

movie]
MOOD BOARD - INSPIRATIONS
For my music video I have a very specific vision for it, I am certain of the visual aesthetic for this
video. So I compiled together all the films that came to mind on how I wanted my video to look,
the films that have inspired me.
Like I said, I want the video to look visually interesting and dynamic so naturally Blade
Runner 2049 came to mind, one of the most beautiful films I've seen, absolutely stunning.
The array of colours on display is incredibly pleasing for me. Likewise Paris, Texas also came to
mind, not just because of the use of colour but complicated relationship at the forefront of the
film, something I may want to explore in my narrative driven music video. Expanding on that, the
classic relationship of Bonnie and Clyde is another key inspiration, a criminal couple which will be
prominent in my video.
Another film that has heavily inspired the look, feel, and narrative of my video is The
Conversation. It's a phenomenal film, the idea of someone being a professional
eavesdropper, listening in on your every word really fascinates me. Gene Hackman plays this
role brilliantly, so quiet but full of fear of what repercussions his work could have on others.
What the character does in that film, with the technology of eavesdropping on people will
be very apparent for the visual metaphor my video opens with, it'll look quite similar but mean
something very different, he's not listening in on a stranger, he's spying on himself.
RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a
15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing
footage to convey the type
of video you want to make
STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro, verse, chorus,
verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to each section
You can use this as the master template for your production, then add
more shots to each section when you developyour full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the song, then
add a slide for each section with timings, lyrics, what happens and
details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you go, to break up
the process.
The first minuet is purely music, not much shall
happen, build the atmosphere
As the lyrics kick in, things
start to happen, quick cuts
to his memories, but we do
not hold on them until
We now swiftly
transistion to the
memories of the young
man. Calm memories,
cool and collective, long
takes, the cuts are
smooth and slow. Until
the music picks up and
alters.
Opening shot, before the lyrics,
push in of young man sat at his
desk, surrounded in darkness, only
light cast from the screens.
The following shots are close ups of
props and details, still no lyrics, still
building atmosphere from music.
Now the music has picked up we
rush into the crime aspect of the
narrative, almost a reveal, subvert
expectations of a love narrative. I
show this by when the music picks
up, cut to show the two planning a
robbery,papers scattered around
in an abandoned house, close ups
of text referring to the plans. More
close up shots of them handling
guns. More aggressive,
arguments, planning,
escaping, still cutting
betweenthe searching on
the desk and time-lapse.
The lighting changes in
the searching to reflect
the memories.
Build up to the robbery, sat
in resturant waitng for the
right moment...
The cuts become quicker to reflect
the alter in the music and change of
pace within the narrative, things
become more dangerous.
Red and blue flashing lights
Now we are in the thick of it,
the song is at its loudest and
most aggressive, we see more
violence, the robbery takes
place tragically going wrong,
push in on the two lover
criminals sat at the restaurant
table, handheld whip pan
following the chaos of the
robbery. The young woman, his
love is killed, he runs in rage
and anger leading to his head
injury, inflicted by himself,
causing him to forget
everything, everything goes
hazy in a blur we see quick
flashes, all dissolving together
until we dissolve back into the
time-lapse running through the
streets until it stops, slows down
on the young woman. The song
ends. Fade out.
STORYBOARDING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
 http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
 http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and scan or
copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
To acompany my storyboards is a script detailing
everything that happens within the video. The
storyboards I did draw are shots that I could refer
to during production to the camera oparator so
they know whar I'm looking for. The script also
helps the actress and others understand the story
when its written out in more detail, the script is like
my bible during production containing everything
that happens and what needs to be filmed,
another form of a shot list of you like.
SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown of what you need to shoot for your video. It should work
in partnership with your storyboard. It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production folder.
Shot No. Shot Type Estimated duration Description/notes (e.g. camera movement, specific directions for performers, etc)

Potential problems: run out of time. We
only have roughly a 90 minuet window to
shoot, however it's not set in stone,
depending on if customers are still in the
restaurant after 3pm. The scene is
relatively short to shoot, it will take longer

Potential problems: since shooting in the public streets,
could have public interference, looking into the camera,
walking into the frame, questioning what I'm doing. To
avoid this I will shoot during the late afternoon, calm

explain that I don't need a permit to shoot in public.
RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using thetable in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a starting point
Completing a generic filming assessmentwould be a start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as youprogress yourproduction
Remember,a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document, you should evaluateif anything changes in productionand when you put control
measures in place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each location
Hazard Risk Who might be
hurt
How will
manage the risk
Sharp branches
and thorns
Someone could cut
themselves or riun
an item of clothing.
Cast and crew Director will visit the
location that poses the
risk before the shoot to
minimise the risk of injury
by cutting down any large
thorns and branches.
Crossing the road
unsafely.
Car could unintensally
drive into someone
Cast and crew Only three people make up
the cast and crew so less
people to worry about, we
shall all cross ay the same
time when the road is clear
and use common sense.
Wires on the
floor from the
lighting
Someone could trip over
the wire causing the LED
light to fall and break,
also the indivisual could
be injured
Cast and crew All wires will be marked
down, and all cast and
crew are told to watch
out. Also use the batteries
on the lights, if possible
iliminating all risk of wires
The location not included in
the risk assessment table
are ones chosen as they
are safer and lower any
risk of injury such as my
bedroom and the
restaranut.

    TASK 1 IdeaGeneration and Research
  • 4.
RESEARCH & IDEAGENERATION Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!] Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles, techniques and conventions that we have looked at in previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the song differently using different methods You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images, mind maps, etc For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate these
  • 5.
RESEARCH Watch a selectionof videos to get your ideas started, make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides, screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc and how this might link to your production Hint! You’ve already done this in your case study, so you can summarise that here where relevant

    • VAMPIRE WEEKEND-A-PUNK Vampire Weekend- A-Punk ▪ Over/under cranking (do everything slowly then speed it up in post, synched with song. Vice-versa for slow motion). ▪ MV Conventions: Simulated performance ▪ Single take, technique! ▪ Link between what's on screen and the song, they play off each other. ▪STORMZY– VASSI BOP STORMZY– VASSI BOP ▪ Very slick ▪ Smooth. seamless transitions ▪ Camera always moving, always something going on, draws the viewer in, rewatchable, high production value. ▪ Synchronised dancing, eye catching, good choreography ▪ Opening shot: low angle- Stormzy dominant figure ▪ Stormzy very drawing, prominent, in centre stage Behind the houses of parliament- contextual At beginning, just Stormzy, the video builds, more people Opening shot Closing shot
  • 7.
HOT CHIP- IFEEL BETTER Hot Chip- I Feel Better ▪Subverts expectations of a cringe boy band music video, plays on our previous knowledge on the tropes and style of boy band music videos. ▪Again, a simulated performance. ▪Flat lighting- no dimensions or shadows. ▪Turns very strange, overall message is to show how bad boy bands are, and the actual band (hot chip) wanting to distinguish themselves as something else. Madonna – Vogue Very slick and smooth, the camera is stable as it glides through the models imitating the statues. Uses the basic conventions we expect from a music video, lip syncing, cut to the beat, synchronised dance but with style, everyone being well lit, in the spotlight evoking status and power. At the end of the music video the models are all dancing together,in contrast to the start where they are stood still, almost like they've been awakened- this adding to Madonna's image of powerful and glamorous.
  • 8.
BEASTIE BOYS -INTERGALACTIC ▪ Very bizarre high energy, draws viewer in, makes them invested in the video, therefore the runtime flies by. High production value (big practical models, similar to power rangers, meant to look practical- yet shot gritty, time-lapse, fisheye shots, on location shooting, fast edits. Entertaining story being told, narrative driven. Brokennarrative, singing to camera (chorus) song is repetitive, the structure is repetitive. Creates expectation we understand the structure quickly, so we come to expect the narrative to resolve. Music video convention, low angle shots, we are looking up at them, they come down from a spaceship, other worldly presence. Over/undercranking, adding to the high energy absurd nature of the video. Costume design- eye catching, colourful, unique, not a typical costume you would see the artistic wearing in a music video, howeverit fits the style. When singing to the camera (chorus) Forced perspective, practical

MIND MAP OFIDEAS [SUMMARY OF IDEAS] Listening in, putting the jigsaw together of his life. Ideas Past and present cut together. Present: lonely, cold, dark, listening in on his life and others? All in his head. Past love, beating heart of the flashback part of the narrative His past crime life, coming to terms with his sins Towards end, strobe lighting, centre faming, in his head The whole thing takes place in his mind: layer 1- process of rememberingvisually shown through listening device: layer3- finding the key, time-lapse: layer3- his memories. CINEMATIC
  • 13.
SUMMARY – OPPORTUNITIES 1)Use colour to represent certain events and emotions. This also creates a more visually pleasing aesthetic 2) Almost constant camera movement, builds and gets quicker over the course of the video. 3) Intercutting between memoriesand the mind, play around with audio possibly?? Opportunity to have smooth transitions between memoriesand mind, match cuts, Don’t look now style. 4) Use a long time-lapse intercut throughout of the camera going through his town, at the end finally finds 'the key' to come to terms with accepting his sins. His love. 5) cut to the beat of the song, nice pace and flow.
  • 14.
SUMMARY – RESTRICTIONS 1)The colours used could be misinturpited, may not be bright enough therefore not filling the room or location. Could be distracting or overused. 2) The constant movement could be cause unstable in the camera, too shaky and unclear. Need to plan a clear path and make sure camera is on rig properly. 3) Could become convoluted and a possible challenge to edit. Lots of clips, could make it too much for the software. 4) Filming time-lapse could take a very long time walking around town with camera (must be kept stable, not shaking) the SD card could run out of storage, run out of time. Something unexpected could happen, multiple takes. Time consuming. 5) Won't always cut to the beat, as would limit the shot use and long takes, but definitely will, add to flow.

FINAL IDEA –ARTIST/TITLE/INFO Jigsaw Falling into Place / Radiohead British rock group that was arguably the most accomplished art-rock band of the early 21st century. This revered quintet made some of the most majestic—if most angst-saturated—music of the postmodern era. Formed in the mid-1980s at Abingdon School in Oxfordshire. Cold Play David Bowie Experimental, art-rock
  • 16.
FINAL IDEA –TRACK SUMMARY – JIGSAW FALLING INTO PLACE Jigsaw falling into place is semi-autobiographical, based on the bands (radiohead)messy drunken nights, that the band fondly rememberfrom their university days. The pace of the song starts off slow and moody, with the first 58 seconds of the song just being music and humming. Soon it picks up, to be quite fast paced and loud, then abrubley ends. If we consider the subtext of the band's inspiration for the song, the pace nicely matches. The night usually starts off slow and quiet, with maybe a few drinks. But later in, the drinks are more frequent and heavy, everything gets louder and hazy, and then it ends, you find yourself waking up trying to remember what happened.
  • 17.
FINAL IDEA –YOUR IDEA In a nutshell my video synopsis: a troubled ex-criminal attempts to reflect and come to terms with his past from the horrible crimes and his dead lover. I will convey this through filming everything in his mind. The reason why he's sat listening in is to visually show him trying to remember these events in a unquie way, rather than him just stood in real time thinking. The song I'm using (jigsaw falling into place) is experimental, so I'm going to make my video experimental, using interesting and different techniques.

GUIDANCE: PRE-PRODUCTION ASSESSMENT You needto assess the viability of your production and investigate what is required to enable you to make your music video Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will need to investigate standard costings for such a production and apply these to your planned production considering which equipmentyou would need and resources, etc Resourcesto support this are in the Pre-production assessment folder on Blackboard Delete the questions on each slide and insert your responses

LOCATIONS Helmsley, shooting onthe streets, the square, the suburbs. When shooting out in the open, possible limitations of unexpected public interference, weather conditions, safety regarding cars. We will film on a dry day, however if the weather forecast is wrong another day will be chosen as our backup. On the other hand, the rain and weather could add to the atmosphere of the video and work to my advantage. I also need a clear space for a desk, tv monitors, sound board, and other set dressing. The space surrounding it will be pitch black, the only light coming from the monitor and lap. This space will be my bedroom. Restaurant, is where I work so will get permission from the boss. Will shoot during closing time from 3 to around half past 4, as they reopen for dinner service at 5. So time is LIMITED, move fast and plan. Abandoned buliding, slightly dangerous to enter however not impossible if done properly. Will inspect the area before shoot, clear out sharp spikes, thorns, or bushes. Cast and crew will have to dress appropriately to limit any injuries. Town square VERY busy in the day, film late afternoon to limit public interference. Allow enough time to avoid filming in the dark

EQUIPMENT Canon 200D, maincamera. Will have 2 fully charged batteries, of course having 2 in case the other one dies. NumerousSD cards so I will not run out of storage. Canon 1300D (back up camera) again multiple batteries Wide angle lens 10-18mm Tri-pod Dolly to connect to the feet of tri-pod, smooth movement on smooth ground. Camera stabiliser, handheld shots more stable, not having to touch the camera, no added noise of hands on the camera or breathing from camera operator. Cover for Camera, in case it rains to protect camera from damages. LED Lighting kit, with coloured filters. With them I have batteries, so the lights are portable to other locations, if the batteries run out or fail on me, hopefully a plug point will be nearby, however that limits the flexibility of the lighting, depending on the plug point. Slider PLUS, attach to the tri-pod to get a nice push it/push out/slide left or right, a better dolly basically. Backpack to store most equipment and transport easily. Smoke machine (possibly) All equipment is my own.

FACILITIES Editing will takeplace at college using adobe premiere pro. Premiere pro is a professional software with many features that will allow me to enhance my music video, we must also use this when editing. I've used a few times before however this video will be the first proper time; I use the software to edit a project.

PERSONNEL Crew: Lucas (me)as director, Jack camera operator. Cinematographer strengths: doing the same course, so will be on the same page. Since they're new to cameras, might offer a different perspective. Weaknesses: may not have the patience to work with director and get the perfect shot, no matter how long it will take. Relativley new to cameras and filmmaking, so will need guidance on how to use camera and what type of shot I want to achieve. Won't have a sense of urgency or time to complete the shoot without going over schedule. Cast: Abi as young woman. Lucas (me) as young man. Background extra for certain segments: TBC In total 4 membersof personnel. I'm available all the time, the production will be based at my house. Abi lives in the next village along, 3 minuet car journey at best, my mum shall collect her and bring her back. Jack lives in Helmsley, so he can just walk to my house.

SEGMENTS OF MUSICVIDEO Layer 1: visual metaphor for searching and unlocking the memories, young man sat listening to them, watching them in a dark smokey room, alone. Layer 2: memories-intimate moments with young woman (on location, at a park, forest, streets) planning robbery (abandoned house), arguments with young woman, actual robbery (restaurant), escaping running. Layer 3: time-lapse through town, ending with the young woman.

PRE-PRODUCTION: VISUAL PLANNING Thissection is concerned with the visual planning of your music video You should use this section to develop the sequencing or your video, establish the relationship between the visuals and the track itself and create a structure for you to follow when filming It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before you make it; it will make filming and production a more streamlined process The following tasks are part of your visual planning  Pre-visualisation and concept boards  Storyboarding  Shot list
  • 28.
PRE-VISUALISATION/CONCEPT BOARDS Tool forexploring the direction and visuals Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel” Presents key moments in your video A means to sketch/plan ideas Information on colour/lighting Defining the “mise-en-scene” Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the production, the following slides have been left blank for you to approach in your own way, add more as you need to Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this: http://io9.com/5941145/this- directors-video-pitch-for-hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real- movie]

MOOD BOARD -INSPIRATIONS For my music video I have a very specific vision for it, I am certain of the visual aesthetic for this video. So I compiled together all the films that came to mind on how I wanted my video to look, the films that have inspired me. Like I said, I want the video to look visually interesting and dynamic so naturally Blade Runner 2049 came to mind, one of the most beautiful films I've seen, absolutely stunning. The array of colours on display is incredibly pleasing for me. Likewise Paris, Texas also came to mind, not just because of the use of colour but complicated relationship at the forefront of the film, something I may want to explore in my narrative driven music video. Expanding on that, the classic relationship of Bonnie and Clyde is another key inspiration, a criminal couple which will be prominent in my video. Another film that has heavily inspired the look, feel, and narrative of my video is The Conversation. It's a phenomenal film, the idea of someone being a professional eavesdropper, listening in on your every word really fascinates me. Gene Hackman plays this role brilliantly, so quiet but full of fear of what repercussions his work could have on others. What the character does in that film, with the technology of eavesdropping on people will be very apparent for the visual metaphor my video opens with, it'll look quite similar but mean something very different, he's not listening in on a stranger, he's spying on himself.
  • 31.
RIP-O-MATIC You should alsoconstruct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic test reel using existing footage to convey the type of video you want to make
  • 32.
STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN Breakdown yourtrack into it basic sections [e.g. intro, verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to each section You can use this as the master template for your production, then add more shots to each section when you developyour full visual plan You should create a slide showing all the sections of the song, then add a slide for each section with timings, lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots You could storyboard and shot list each section as you go, to break up the process.
  • 33.
The first minuetis purely music, not much shall happen, build the atmosphere As the lyrics kick in, things start to happen, quick cuts to his memories, but we do not hold on them until We now swiftly transistion to the memories of the young man. Calm memories, cool and collective, long takes, the cuts are smooth and slow. Until the music picks up and alters. Opening shot, before the lyrics, push in of young man sat at his desk, surrounded in darkness, only light cast from the screens. The following shots are close ups of props and details, still no lyrics, still building atmosphere from music.
  • 34.
Now the musichas picked up we rush into the crime aspect of the narrative, almost a reveal, subvert expectations of a love narrative. I show this by when the music picks up, cut to show the two planning a robbery, papers scattered around in an abandoned house, close ups of text referring to the plans. More close up shots of them handling guns. More aggressive, arguments, planning, escaping, still cutting betweenthe searching on the desk and time-lapse. The lighting changes in the searching to reflect the memories. Build up to the robbery, sat in resturant waitng for the right moment... The cuts become quicker to reflect the alter in the music and change of pace within the narrative, things become more dangerous. Red and blue flashing lights
  • 35.
Now we arein the thick of it, the song is at its loudest and most aggressive, we see more violence, the robbery takes place tragically going wrong, push in on the two lover criminals sat at the restaurant table, handheld whip pan following the chaos of the robbery. The young woman, his love is killed, he runs in rage and anger leading to his head injury, inflicted by himself, causing him to forget everything, everything goes hazy in a blur we see quick flashes, all dissolving together until we dissolve back into the time-lapse running through the streets until it stops, slows down on the young woman. The song ends. Fade out.

STORYBOARDING Your storyboard shouldbring your idea to life Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video Provides a basis for production Suggested online storyboard creators are:  https://www.storyboardthat.com  http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]  http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images] Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and scan or copy to insert it onto your slides There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
  • 39.
To acompany mystoryboards is a script detailing everything that happens within the video. The storyboards I did draw are shots that I could refer to during production to the camera oparator so they know whar I'm looking for. The script also helps the actress and others understand the story when its written out in more detail, the script is like my bible during production containing everything that happens and what needs to be filmed, another form of a shot list of you like.
  • 40.
SHOT LIST Your shotlist should contain the sequential breakdown of what you need to shoot for your video. It should work in partnership with your storyboard. It will be your working document when you film It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot description, framing and action you will see It should also have information on performers in the scene and other props, etc Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production folder. Shot No. Shot Type Estimated duration Description/notes (e.g. camera movement, specific directions for performers, etc) 1 Dolly 20-30 seconds Dolly push in, camera will slowly push in on our character sat at his desk. Potential problems: run out of time. We only have roughly a 90 minuet window to shoot, however it's not set in stone, depending on if customers are still in the restaurant after 3pm. The scene is relatively short to shoot, it will take longer to set up, I know what needs doing and will explain to the camera man what needs setting up. Where we will set up the camera and lighting Will have to move tables out of the way, set a single table up in front of the window so we have more room to shoot from behind, get a nice push in shot using the slider attached to the tri-pod.

RISK ASSESSMENT Risk Assesseach separate filming location using thetable in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a starting point Completing a generic filming assessmentwould be a start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as youprogress yourproduction Remember,a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document, you should evaluateif anything changes in productionand when you put control measures in place You should add the table to each call sheet for each location Hazard Risk Who might be hurt How will manage the risk Sharp branches and thorns Someone could cut themselves or riun an item of clothing. Cast and crew Director will visit the location that poses the risk before the shoot to minimise the risk of injury by cutting down any large thorns and branches. Crossing the road unsafely. Car could unintensally drive into someone Cast and crew Only three people make up the cast and crew so less people to worry about, we shall all cross ay the same time when the road is clear and use common sense. Wires on the floor from the lighting Someone could trip over the wire causing the LED light to fall and break, also the indivisual could be injured Cast and crew All wires will be marked down, and all cast and crew are told to watch out. Also use the batteries on the lights, if possible iliminating all risk of wires The location not included in the risk assessment table are ones chosen as they are safer and lower any risk of injury such as my bedroom and the restaranut.
