RESEARCH
I think researched helped a lot at first. My original idea for my music
video was to use a song made by Idles and at first all my research
was based off them and their music videos and it really helped. I
learnt a lot about their brand and style and how that would influence
me in my music video. But as I got so fa into planning, I decided to
change to a song by Bloc Party and they're very different to Idles,
saying that though they did have some of the same genre conventions
and that did help me when it came to further planning. I realised that
as well as Idles Bloc Party kind of fitted into the music video genre of
'different'. Some Of Idle's styles were definitely used in my music
video.
PLANNING
My planning really helped when it came to shooting and editing
my music video. Although at the start of planning I was still set on using
an Idles song, the planning for that also really helped, I still used most
of the ideas that I had for the Idles song with the Bloc Party song.
When it came tom making a shot list, I think that paired with breaking
down the lyrics and highlighting the parts of the song for the music
video helped the most. It then took what was just mental imagery that
would change every time I played it over in my head into something
real that I could follow.
TIME MANAGEMENT
My time managementwas all ok until it came to filming. None of my
research time pushed over to when I was meant to be planning and
none of my planning time pushed over into what was meant to be
production time but when it got to filming, I left it very late to get
filming. I thought that what I wanted to get wouldn't take very long and
due to the availability of my actor I left it to the last available
weekend to film. Although we managed to get everything we wanted
and even more, it was a very stressful weekend, especially the Sunday.
That was the day where we had to go out and travel to spots I wanted
to film and it resulted in frantic searches and stressful filming. Although
I had limited time and very limited light, I think I managed reasonably
well with making the right decisions on where to film and when and still
managed to get the shots I wanted and more importantly howI wanted
without having to compromise.
TECHNICAL QUALITIES - CAMERA
Working with the camera has to have been my favourite part of the whole project.
When it came to borrowing a camera form college I left it to late with what I
decided I wanted to use because when it came to booking, there was nothing left,
but luckily for me my mum has one that she let me borrow. It took me a bit of time
to wrap my head around trying to use it and what its capabilities were and what
limits it had. But once I had understood how to use it, it was all very easy. I feel as
if I used the camera well and t came out exactly how I wanted. Although the shot of
the actor in the child's room was extremely difficult to set up, especially the lighting.
My mum's camera didn't have many options on it such as aperture or shutter speed
but I did have the ability to change the ISO, but because I was filming in the dark I
didn't want to have the ISO too high and get a lot of noise so I resulted to having
to set up more lights in the room to light it how I wanted. One light for the
background and one light facing the actor but trying not to make harsh shadows or
end up with shot that looked like it was out of a horror film by only lighting his face.
With the clips of the guitar I kept the camera very still, no movement at all, but
when it came to the action sequence I used some camera movement to try and
emphasise the speed and franticness of a robbery.
TECHNICAL QUALITIES - CAMERA
I used some camera techniques such as Whip Pans and a Pull Out to increase the
speed of the action and keep the audience engaged. I made sure that when it came
to the action sequences I was going to stay away from just keeping the camera still
all the time. There was one shot where the robber is walking into the shop and the
camera stays very still as he walks towards the shop but to give context as to where
he is and what he is doing I had to show that it was clearly a shop and to do so I
whipped the camera up fast to point at the name of the shop.
TECHNICAL QUALITIES – EDITING/POST
Before making this music videos my skills were very basic, unbelievably basic
infact. And even now my skills and great but I do know a lot more than I did
before and I'm a lot more confident using premire pro. I now know skills such
as how to zoom in and move the position of the clip, even rotate it. I got told
by one of my tutuors that if I am slowing a clip down and it gets a bit choppy
because I didn't increase the frame rate on the camera there is an option
called Optical Flow under Time Interpolation that will smoothen everything out.
I am also begining to mess with re-colouring clips and what certain options will
do what but I'm not very good with that and that's definitely something I want
to improve on.
AESTHETIC QUALITIES
I definitly took some aesthetic qualities form the orignal music video for Ratchet
by Bloc Party but I also took some aesthetic qualities from some of Idles' music
videos but I didn't try to just completely coppy them, I tried to do it my own
way. With the Bloc Party music video I wanted to kind of copy the way they
effected the video but in a way that it's clearly effected and abnormal. And
with the Idles video, I really liked the follow cam, with Idles it's clearly meant to
be a car camera rig as well as being a POV shot from the person in the car
and I used that idea to run with the camera handheld so it's a POV of the
police officer. The handhelledtechnique was on purpose to give it that shake
to add to the shot. As well as that I loved the colouring of the Idles music video
and kind of wanted the same without copying it, instead of going for a pink, I
opted for more of an orange.

AUDIENCE APPEAL
I think that my music video would definitely appeal to the target audience but I think
that it might also appeal to people older than the target audience. I tried to make it
appeal to the target audience by adding comedy in certain bits such as; a banana for
a gun, a shabby police outfit and a police badge that reads "Mr. Detective". But as
well as that I added a funny narrative that had some action and pace to keep that
audience engaged in the music video. But as well as that I think it could appeal to
people older than the target audience due to the fact that the song chosen is older
than more popular songs now and is also upbeat and catchy.
PEER FEEDBACK
FEEDBACK 1
What did you like about the product?
It was engaging and stylish. It fit well with the music and most of the
edits worked seamlessly with one another.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
I would liked to have seen it in higher definition.
FEEDBACK 2
What did you like about the product?
▪ Liked the zoom features which transitioned into the next scene.
▪ Good use of colour grading for the shots that lasted longer to make it
more interesting.
▪ Liked how there was a story in the music video because it gave it a
narrative and kept me engaged.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
▪ Could make the longer scenes split up into didn’t shots. For example,
the scene where the detective is starting his car and reversing. This will
just maintain the flow of the video.
- Assessed by Henry Graham :)
FEEDBACK 3
What did you like about the product?
 The editing is really good, I particularly enoyed the the end bit that seems like a
scooby doo scene.
 The is a consistant story that is easy to visually understand.
 The video is mostly fast paced and keeps my attention as a veiwer.
 The start bit of having the music play on one side of the headphones, then the other
and then both was really cool.
 Used a lot of locations with the actor in the same location.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
 The clip where the guy is changing lasts a bit too long in my opinion.
 Some of the colour stuff at the start seemed a little random and out of place
 Maybe for slomotion try record in a higher frame rate.
PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
I agree with the feedback that some of the shots were maybe just a bit too
long, for example the shot of the robber getting ready. It was too long and
I should have broken it up into at least two shots to just keep the pace of the
fast music and keep the audience fully engaged. As well as that there is the
shot of the detective in the car that is too long as well, that could do with
being broken up as well. I also agree with the feedback of the camera
quality. That links to my time managementand I agree that should improve
because it was my poor time management that lead to me not being able
to get a good camera from College. By the time I was about to get one,
there was none left.
I disagree with the feedback on the changing of the colour at the start of
the video and I understand why it can seem "random" and "out of place" if
you haven't seen the original music video because the colour changing is
almost a reference to the original video's editing in a way to seem
abnormal and weird.
