RESEARCH
Strengths:
Some strengths of my research was that I looked in depth into a few songs
and music videos so that I could get a good idea of what song I wanted to
do and what Sort of things and what style I wanted to have for my music
video. It helped me know what pace of song and video I wanted to make,
and what sort of effect style I would use. By looking at different songs and
videos, it helped me see how most music videos looked and what sort of
things (shots etc) I could try when filming. It also helped me choose
different locations to film in once I chose my song. I looked at what
locations people used in the same song genre as me and thought about
places that were similar in my area. I made a mind map which had all my
ideas in one place so that it would be easy to refer back to.
Weaknesses:
Some weaknesses of my research as I didn’t look into many songs and
videos so I didn’t have lots of ideas generated from them, I could have
looked into more videos which would have only helped my video as I would
have had more ideas to put in my video. I didn’t research enough into
different types of shots for music videos and what works well, so in my
video I had a repeat of quite a few of the same shots when I could have had
a variety. I could have researched more into the process of making a music
video. I could have research multiple genres instead of just the one I
did.
PLANNING
Strengths:
Some strengths of my planning is that I already gained a good idea of what I
wanted to do for my music video from the research so that made it easier
when doing the planning. I had a good shot plan with many different shots
so that I had more than I needed for when it came to editing, I could choose
what looked best. I had a good idea of the different locations that I was
going to use. Doing all this made it easier when it came to filming as I
already knew what I was going to do for all of the shots so all I had to do
was film. Planning helped as it meant I didn’t go into filming blind without
and idea of what to do.
Weaknesses:
Some weaknesses of my planning is that I didn't have to much of a back up
if things went wrong. One of the people filming had to cancel which left me
to do the filming with a tri pod instead of someone filming me. This meant
that some of the shots I wanted to get couldn’t be obtained because I had to
use a tripod. I also had to go to a different but similar location as one of the
ones I was going to go to I could get transport to because of things out of
my control, but I went and got similar shots in a place closer to me. I could
have planned better for these but I feel like I did well to get the shots
needed with what I had access to in the end.
TIME MANAGEMENT
I managed my time quite well when filming and editing my music video. I
filmed over the half term break so that I had plenty of time to make sure I
had enough footage of a good quality. Because of the problems with people
and transport I had less time to film what I wanted to and had to change
some of the shots, but I still managed to get what I needed. I had a good
spilt of filming and editing with that I had plenty of time to edit and take my
time and not rush anything to make sure the edit was the best I could
produce. I think with more time, I could have gotten a wider variety of shots
and made sure that the shots I did get were better quality and not as blurry,
as a few shots I used were blurry. I did complete the music video on time
with plenty of time and effort put into it, but with more time, some of the
shots could have been of a higher quality. With the problems I had with
transport and then people I think I managed the amount of time well,
judging by the fact I was planning on have more.
TECHNICAL QUALITIES -
CAMERA
• For the intro of the song, I took inspiration from a J Cole song (left) as for the
intro it had some trees swaying in the wind, and I wanted to do the same
(right).
• As the songs are in the same genre, the scene fits well into the video.
• This works as the intro in these sort of songs as they usually start of slow so
having a slow starting shot fits well.
• Both are a long shot which pans across the screen
• Some differences between my video and other videos in the same genre is
that I was the only person in the video whereas in most hiphop/rap videos they
will have shots with multiple people involved.
TECHNICAL
QUALITIES –
EDITING/POST
• I took some inspiration from the music video for Trippie
redds song 'love scars'.
• I liked the glitching effects and the constant change of
colour that was happening throughout the video, so in
mine for parts of it I added a glitching effect where
different coloured layers would pop up, and I added
effects that made there be a coloured aura around me.
• The type of song isnt the same but the effects can work
for multiple styles.
• My video has quite a few effects but also has a lot
of none effected footage to make the effects not
overdone.
• In most videos in this Genre there will be a few effects
but there won't be too many.
AESTHETIC QUALITIES
On the most part my video is of a good quality and standard. I believe that my
video had a lot of creative areas and aspects to it, with the colour changes and use
of effects. I created a sort of glitch effect where the shot would change colour and
position for a few frames, and I think this created a good effect for parts of the
video and I like what it adds to the video. I believe the effects are strong point of
the video and I believe that they match the video well and add a good creative style.
A weakness of the look of the video is that some of the shots and clips arent in very
good lighting and are out of focus because of the weather which was contantly
changing. If I was to improve my video this would be the main area I would look
into for improvement, I would do this by retaking the shots and making sure they
are of a better quality, I would also make sure I had someone to film for me instead
of using a tripod as this time I had problems with people cancelling so I need to
have multiple backups. Overall, I believe that my video is quite creative and looks
good for most of the video.
AUDIENCE APPEAL
The target audience for my video was 16–24-year-olds which I
believe I have it hit that target. I believe the song choice fits well
with people around that age and my video does aswell because it
doesn’t have loads of bright flashy colours with loads of things
popping up on screen like you would see in a video for a younger
target audience. I believe I have used a good amount of colour so
that it keeps it at this area but to keep it from being boring with
not enough colour. This goes back to the aesthetic qualities as I
chose them while in editing so that it would match what I was
aiming for.
