 Nanotechnology is the skill and science of
manipulating matter at the Nanoscale.
 The word “Nano” which emanates from the greek
word for dwarf, designates a billionth.
 Nanotechnology is not a new science or
technology, it is rather a boost of the sciences
and technologies which already subsist from
many years and it is logical progression of the
work that has been done to analyze the nature of
our world at an even minute scale.
 The construction business will inevitably be a beneficiary of this
Nanotechnology.
 It can be used for design and construction process in many areas
since, nanotechnology generated products have many unique
characteristics.
 Many disciplines of civil engineering, in convergence with design
and construction process can be profited from this technology. For
example, new structural materials with unique properties stronger
and lighter composites, self-disinfecting surfaces, air cleaners, Nano
sized sensors etc.
 Literally Nanotechnology in civil engineering is to enhance
properties of material used in construction and to satisfy the general
aspects of people i.e., of quality, control and reliability.
Following are some listed of Nanoparticle and their role in smart
construction field:
 1.Slurry of amorphous Nano-(Sio2)- Improves segregation resistance in
self compacting concrete(SCC).
 2.Nano-silica (SiO2)- displace part of the cement to densify the
concrete and gain.
 3. Oxidiesd multi-walled Nanotube(MWNT)- Increase compressive
strength and flexural strength in concrete.
 4.Micro encapsulated healing polymer(Smart Material)- Automatically
closes the cracks in concrete when they occur.
 5. Fumed silica Nanoparticles – Fire protective glass.
 6. Organically modified bentonite asphalt- Road construction with
more durability.
 Concrete is one of the most familiar and broadly used
construction material.
 It is a mixture of Portland cement and aggregates and
water or rocks.
 The key to achieving a strong, durable concrete rest in the
careful proportionating and mixing of the ingredients.
 Typically, a commix is about 10 to 15 percent cement, 60
to 75 percent aggregate and 15 to 20 percent water.
Entrained air in many concrete commixes may additionally
take up another 5 to 8 percent.

 Topmix permeable concrete is that innovative techniques
for permeable pavement with a base and sub-base that
allow the movement of storm-water through the surface.
 Topmix permeable accommodates 36,000 millimeter of
water an hour, or approximately 1056 gallons every
minute.
 This topmix permeable paving is effective in managing
runoff from paved surfaces, on the railway tracks for
smooth running of trains in rainy season and on the
roadways and highways for better transportation.
 Tarmac, a UK building materials and solutions company
generated topmix permeable to divert rainwater during
storms.

 Sustainable construction is defined as all who produce, develop, plan,
design, build, alter, or maintain the infrastructural environment.
 The construction industry follows the following vision for sustainable
development:
 1. To regenerate of housing, particularly to rejuvenate town centre socially
and economically.
 2. Planning communities to reduce car use.
 3. Minimising mineral extraction.
 4. Protection of the countryside.
 5. Utilization of energy and water more efficiently.
 6. Genuinely industries plays an integral character in providing a better
quality of life through its workout.
 It reveals the utmost need of application of
nanotechnology in the field of construction for
sustainable development.
 Research in this field could pay heroic dividends
in the areas of technological breakthroughs and
economic boon.
 In shorts, this paper wrap up with a strategic
plan on how civil engineering can be profited
with the implementation of nanotechnology
resulting in construction of smart structures.
