The barge Pegasus will transport the core stage of NASA's new rocket Space Launch System (SLS) from New Orleans to other NASA centers for testing and launch. SLS will be the most powerful rocket for deep space missions including Mars. Pegasus was modified to carry the 212-foot-tall, 27.6-foot-diameter core stage which contains liquid hydrogen and oxygen tanks and avionics. Pegasus will take the core stage from the assembly facility in New Orleans to centers in Alabama and Mississippi for testing before delivery to Florida for launch.
