National Grandparent's Day is celebrated annually on the first Sunday after Labor Day. It was established in 1978 by President Jimmy Carter to honor the important role that grandparents play in children's lives. Since being founded over 30 years ago, the number of grandparents in the U.S. has more than doubled from 17 million to over 70 million today. The holiday was inspired by Marian McQuade, who founded it to recognize grandparents and bring attention to senior citizens in nursing homes.
