1. National Medicinal Plants
Board ( NMPB)
Presented by:
SHAHEEN SHABBIR
MPharm I Semester
Department of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry
SPER, Jamia Hamdard
2. National Medicinal Plants Board(NMPB)
• India is one of the richest countries in the world in terms of biodiversity, has 15 agro-climatic zones.
Out of the 17000-18000 species of flowering plants, more than 7000 are estimated to have medicinal
usage in folk and documented systems of medicine like Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha & Homoeopathy
(AYUSH System of Medicine).
• The Government of India has set up National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB) on 24th November
2000. Currently the board is working as a section of Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga &
Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha & Homoeopathy), Government of India.
• The primary mandate of NMPB is to develop an appropriate mechanism for coordination between
various ministries/ departments/ organizations in India and implements support policies/programs
for overall (conservation, cultivation, trade and export) growth of medicinal plants sector both at the
Central /State and International level
.
3. Aims and Objectives
promote research and
development
in-situ & ex-situ
conservation
raising awareness
through promotional
activities like creation of
Home/School herbal
gardens.
capacity building
through trainings
quality assurance and
standardization through
development of Good
Agricultural and
Collection Practices
(GACPs)
4. Functions
Primary functions of NMPB is to develop a proper mechanism for co-
ordination between various ministries/ departments/ organization and
implementation of support policies/programs for overall (conservation,
cultivation, trade and export) growth of medicinal plants sector
Promotion of in-situ / ex-situ conservation and cultivation of medicinal
plants.
Advise concerned Ministries/ Departments/ Organizations/ State/ UT
Governments on policy matters relating to schemes and programs for
development of medicinal plants.
Development of protocols for cultivation and quality control.
Provide guidance in the formulation of proposals, schemes and programs
etc. to be taken-up by agencies having access to land for cultivation and
infrastructure for collection, storage and transportation of medicinal
plants.
5. Organize training programs for capacity building of stakeholders on
medicinal plants (including cultivation, conservation, GAPs, GFCPs,
GMPs, Storage, PHM and market information).
Identification, Inventorisation and Quantification of medicinal plants
Undertaking and awarding Scientific, Technological research and
cost-effectiveness studies.
8. IN- SITU
In-situ conservation deals with the on-site
conservation of the wild genetic
resources/genetic diversity in natural habitat. In
India, the conservation of forest areas through
Protected Areas like National Parks, Wildlife
Sanctuaries and Biosphere Reserves.
In-situ conservation of medicinal plants is
carried out through following
activities:
● Medicinal Plants Conservation and
Development Area’s (MPCDA’s)
● In-situ Resource Augmentation
EX -SITU
conservation dealing with the off-site
conservation of the wild genetic resources/
genetic diversity in natural habitat. It includes
the collection, preservation and maintenance of
selected genetic resources from wild.
For example expanding area under medicinal
plants and aromatic species of medicinal value.
Plantations of medicinal plants raised in lands
outside designated forests.
Such plantations are raised by organizations
having ownership / long term lease
of lands and requisite technical competence.
Conservation
Conservation deals with the study of natural resources and their management for sustainable use and
their perpetual existence in their natural habitat.
9. Herbal Gardens
NMPB intend to establish herbal garden of various types to popularize the usefulness of
commonly available and frequently used Medicinal Plants among the various stakeholders
and sensitize the public about our traditional knowledge. It is also a way of conserving Rare,
Endangered and Threatened (RET) species of Medicinal Plants.

10. Information, Education and
Communication (IEC) Activities
NMPB involve in Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities for disseminating the traditional
knowledge among the masses with the objective of spreading awareness about Medicinal Plants.
It is necessary to disseminate information on different aspects of medicinal plants like harvesting from wild,
cultivation technologies, manufacturing, proper handling of raw material, trade etc among various target groups
about the importance of development and management through an appropriate outreach strategy..
11. Activities
• Publicity through regular participation in
Exhibitions/Fairs
• Aushadi Vanaspati Mitra Program (AVM)
• Organizing
Workshops/Seminars/Conferences etc.
• Setting up of Facilitation Centres
• Medicinal Plant Species specific
Campaigns
• Systematic use of Multimedia and other
appropriate communication tools.
• Publication of Periodicals/Magazines and
Newsletters
• Training and Capacity Building initiatives.
12. Cultivation
The main objective of NMPB is to encourage cultivation of medicinal plants and its
sustainable management across the country and to reduce pressure on the collection
from wild habitat in forests.
NMPB is working to promote cultivation of medicinal plants and supported in a
Mission mode under Centrally Sponsored Scheme of “National Mission on Medicinal
Plants (NMMP)” since 2008-09 and now continuing under National AYUSH Mission
(NAM), a flagship program launched by the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of
India during XII Plan period. The program is being implemented in the country
through State Government designated agencies.
13. Quality Planting Material
One of the major underlying reasons behind the slow progress in commercial cultivation of important
medicinal plants (MPs) is the lack of their quality planting material (QPM)
NMPB provides the financial assistance to developed Nurseries and Quality Planting Material / Germ Plasm
Banks as per operational guidelines of NMPB mentioned in Central Sector Scheme of NMPB.
14. Research and Development
1
• Traceability of raw drugs.Germination and seed treatment protocols.Population assessments and
conservation biology Development of DNA barcoding, Spectrometry HPLC methods etc. for setting up
Botanical Reference Standards.
2
• Studies/Documentation on impact of global warming, various policies and regulatory regimes effecting
stake- holders.
• establishment of repositories/gene bank etc.
• Fellowship support for Degrees in the field of medicinal plants
3
• Establishment of quality standards.Ethno-medicinal exploration, documentation and its digitization..
• Identification of substitutes for traded species for inclusion in Pharmacopoeia
15. International Cooperation
For international cooperation the NMPB, under its Central Sector Scheme also supports following
activities as per the scheme guidelines:
Participation in meetings of the relevant agencies at the international level
Exchange visits of experts with countries of interest especially those having similar biogeography as India
Participation in reputed international seminars/exhibitions on botanicals World Wide. This would also entail subsidizing
industry desirous of such participation on reimbursement basis
Commissioning studies on international regulations in the medicinal plants sector as knowledge about this is scarce at present.
Setting up information centers on medicinal plants in Indian Missions abroad
16. Facilitation Centre
The National Medicinal Plants Board through its Facilitation Centres (FCs) will provide a service window for
growers of Medicinal Plants for supporting cultivation, provide handholding support to stakeholders in terms of
technology dissemination, trainings, data compilation and maintenance etc,. The NMPB consider project based
proposal for facilitation Centre.
The Facilitation Centres work in close co-ordination with the concerned State Medicinal Plants
Boards (SMPB) and also provide Training in the formulation of projects of Medicinal Plants
Cultivation, Development and conduct following activities
17. • • Authentication of quality raw materials on the basis of Taxonomic
identification and chemical parameters.
• • Organisation of Stakeholders Meets
• • Publication and dissemination of scheme guidelines, information on
Agro-techniques,markets, prices etc. especially in local languages.
• • To help in production of quality planting material by various agencies
including Forest Department, NGOs and the private nurseries.
• • Making available testing facilities for the material produced under
NMPB schemes, where such facilities exist within the facilitation
centres.
