NERVOUS SYSTEM AND ITS
MAJOR PARTS
By: Jenil Urianza-Moises
OBJECTIVE
 Identify the nervous system and its
major parts
The NERVOUS SYSTEM is
the part of the body that
coordinates its voluntary
and involuntary actions
and transmits signals to
and from the different
parts of the body.
Nervous system and its major parts (lesson 6)
1. BRAIN is made
up of billions of
nerve cells
Nervous system and its major parts (lesson 6)
CEREBRUM is the principal
and most anterior part of the
brain in vertebrates, located
in the front area of the skull
and consisting of two
hemispheres, left ad right,
separated by a fissure.
It is responsible for the
integration of complex
sensory and neutral
functions and the
initiation and
coordination of
voluntary activity in the
body.
CEREBELLUM or little
brain is involved in
some cognitive
functions such as
attention and
language and in
regulating fear and
pleasure responses.
MEDULLA OBLONGATA
is a cone-shaped
neuronal mass
responsible for multiple
autonomic (involuntary)
functions ranging from
vomiting to sneezing.
2. SPINAL CORD is a
long slender nerve
that is connected to
the medulla and goes
down to the spinal
column or backbone.
It carries out two main functions:
1. it connects a large part of the
peripheral nervous system to the brain.
2. Information (nerve impulses) reaching
neurons are transmitted up into the brain.
3. NERVE CELL OR
NEURON is the basic
unit of structure in the
nervous system. It
forms a network to
receive and send
messages.
Nervous system and its major parts (lesson 6)
EVALUATION
Match column A with column B.
Column A Column B
1. Spinal Cord a. It is the control center of the body
2. Nerves b. carry nerve impulses from one part
of the body to another
3. Backbone c. protects the spinal cord
4. Brain d. it is the channel through which
messages travel from the nerves in
the different parts of the body to the
brain at the back
5. Cerebrum e. largest part of the brain
f. controls the movement of muscles
ASSIGNMENT
Make a crossword puzzle about the parts
of the nervous system.
