Chomsky proposed that humans are born with a Language Acquisition Device, a language organ hardwired in our brains containing knowledge of common grammatical rules. The LAD allows children to understand language rules and develop language skills without formal instruction, as it enables comprehension of any language they are exposed to during a critical period of acquisition in early childhood. Key concepts related to language development include Universal Grammar, the critical period hypothesis, and Generative Grammar approaches to teaching.
