The play is set in rural England in the 1970s and takes place over three scenes in Mr. Lamb's garden and Derry's house. It follows the relationship between Mr. Lamb, an elderly man with a prosthetic leg, and Derry, a 14-year-old boy with a disfigured face. Mr. Lamb is optimistic and social despite his disability, while Derry is withdrawn and pessimistic. Mr. Lamb helps change Derry's attitude by showing him that people and things have value regardless of appearance. In the final scene, Mr. Lamb falls from a ladder and dies, having helped Derry overcome his isolation before passing.
