This document discusses the benefits of open source software over proprietary software. It provides several examples to illustrate its points: (1) reinventing the wheel can be avoided with open source code; (2) bugs can be found and fixed more quickly with many reviewers; (3) security is improved with many people reviewing code; (4) technical freedom is gained to see and modify code; and (5) personal freedom is increased to customize and distribute software. Overall, open source allows for knowledge sharing, continuous improvement, more testing and fewer bugs, increased security, and greater technical and personal freedoms.
