PARENT INVOLVEMENT AND WHY IT IS SO
IMPORTANT WHEN SUPPORTING THE
NEEDS OF ALL LEARNERS

MAKE CURRICULUM RELEVANT
 At-risk students are not
necessarily motivated to
learn material.
 If that task is not
complex enough,
students, especially at-
risk students, will want to
understand how the
material they are learning
is relevant to their lives.
(Riegert & Recht, 2012).
 Again involving parents is
important because the
information they provide
can help with providing
relevant material
CREATING BONDS
A MAJOR PART OF TEACHING IS BUILDING
RELATIONSHIPS.
WHY PARENT INVOLVEMENT IS IMPORTANT
WHEN BONDING WITH STUDENTS
 At-risk students often
are not easy to bond
 Many withdraw from
their teachers
 Challenge teacher rules
and expectations
 Make phone calls to
parents to discuss their
child. Make sure every
call is started on a
positive note.
 Find out as much as
possible about the child
by not only talking to the
student but sitting down
and talking to the parent
as well.
 Email parents
occasionally about their
child’s progress in school.
PERSEVERE THROUGH DIFFICULTIES
WHEN CREATING RELATIONSHIPS WITH STUDENTS, THESE TEACHERS
DON'T TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER WHEN STUDENTS AREN'T MEETING
THEIR EXPECTATIONS.
I have found that inviting parent to
make a surprise visit to the school and
let them see for themselves what their
children are doing in school can not
only correct bad behavior but also
make that student engage more in their
child education. In order to do that,
first teacher must have an open door
policy.
For parent who may not be able to
come because of work or other
obligations, teachers could talk to the
parent about using technology like
Skype or oovoo to have a video invite
so parents can see what is going on in
the classroom.
DIFFERENTIATE AND BE FLEXIBLE
This is when it is very important to
connect with parents because who
better than a parent to find out about a
child likes and dislikes. Providing
surveys for parents and students about
the students as well as the parents
interest and passion and combine that
information to come up with a lesson
plans to showcase those likes and
interests. Teacher can provide online
activities at home for students and
parents can connect with each other so
students can actually see that there are
some things they have in common with
their parents,
START FRESH DAILY
 Teachers need to look at these
kids knowing that every day is a
new day.
 All of these teachers provided
their students with fresh starts
every day.
 Teaching students who are at
risk requires energy, dedication,
talent, and commitment.
 By keeping their students'
needs, interests, talents, and
learning styles in the forefront,
these teachers successfully
reach and educate the students
who need them most. (Riegert &
Recht 2012),
 Technology makes it possible to
reach parents more today than
years ago. Teachers can
communicate with parents via
email, social sites, video chats,
webpages, blogs, etc. to gather
information that can help them
better serve the children they
teach. Getting information from
parents as well as students can
help teachers come up with a
better image of what their
students like and dislikes are.
