Project title:
Project: To design a music magazine of our chosen genre: in my case it is
the R&B genre
Project Description: I will be designing a front cover, contents page and
double page spread for a music magazine based on the genre of my choice.
This project is designing and the creating of a music magazine front cover,
contents page and double page spread for my media studies coursework. Over
the duration of the course I will be putting together the magazine and hoping to
produce it to the best possible standard that I can.
Photographer:
 The photographer will be I, whereby I will also take on the role of Art
Director in coordinating and managing the shoot.
 Technical Codes – I will not need complicated shot types and angles, just
MCUs and
Mid Shots in order to capture the person who is in the photo. This is
important in relation to the genre as a close up or medium close up gives
the person in the picture importance. This is a key theme in the R&B and
HIP-HOP genre as all the stars want to be the best and most important
star out there and so doing this relates it back to my genre.
 Lighting – The lighting in the photo will be very dark (Low Key) with a
spotlight in the studio shining on the person having their photo taken as
It represents an element of coolness and trend that is commonly associated with
the genre of R&B. the R&B genre has always been trendy and popular and so this
title needed to match that and I feel that it does as it connotes something that is.
This makes it more appealing to the consumer of the magazine as it is far more
relatable to them. It also makes the magazine relate to its target audience as
trendy things appeal more to those in the late teens and young adults, the target
audience of the magazine rather than people of a younger and older age.

to help them stand out as well as giving it more ‘star appeal’ (Richard
Dyers Theory) as the light makes it look like a concert or at an award
ceremony.
 Post Production – There will be minor effects and retouching made,
possibly reducing any blemishes on the persons face and whitening teeth.
Reference images and ideas:
Casting:
Pictures (Close-Up Head Shots and Full-Length) of potential people you will use
for the shoot.
This person has a mixed race skin tone, with a curly afro type hair style. This is
the best suited person for my magazine as they suit the typical conventions of
both artists in the R&B industry but also they fit the typical conventions of
people who are fans of the industry. As it is a mostly African American industry,
most of the fans and followers of the genre are of that ethnicity. Therefore, it
would be more suitable to have someone of that ethnicity than someone with
white skin as that would make it un relatable to the genre and for the fans.

Model requirements:
The model in my photos will need to look trendy and hip to fit with the social
climbers that are the fans of the R&B genre. This makes it relatable to them and
will allow for more fans to be attracted to the magazine if they can relate to the
cover artist. They must also be of an African American race this is because again
it helps make it relatable to the fans of the genre as most of the artists in the
genre are of that ethnicity. Linking to that, the fact that most popular artists in
the genre such as Trey Songz, Frank Ocean and Miguel are of that ethnicity and

so if people see that the cover artist on my cover is of the same ethnicity then it
will make it more relatable and popular with them.
Wardrobe and Look:
The clothes as shown above must be of a trendy and also stylish look. I would
like them to fit with the current popular clothes of young adults today. This is
because firstly young adults are my target audience and also because the artists
of the R&B genre will be wearing hip and trendy clothes. Therefore in order to
make it relatable to the genre and for it to be a respectable R&B magazine the
person must be wearing the proper outfits otherwise it looks unprofessional.
Hair and Make up:
The hair and makeup is most likely the least important aspect of the outfit. This
is because they will not need makeup unless their skin has blemishes.
Fortunately the person I have chosen to do this does not and so makeup will not
be required. In terms of hair, it will not be on show in many of the pictures as
they will be wearing a flat cap however if the cap is removed to create variety in
the photos, then their hair will need to be combed up and shaved at the sides as
that is the trendy look at this current time. M sources of inspiration for the hair
style would be the R&B artist Miguel as he is currently very popular and has a
look that I wish to base my cover star around.
Where:
The photo shoot will take place in the photography room of my secondary
school. There is a photo studio in the room and so all the photo’s can be taken in
there.

The photography will take place after school on the 20th November 2014
between 3:10pm - 4:20pm as to give me enough time to get a good amount of
quality photos.
