The emergence of Nollywood, Nigeria's movie industry, both confirms and discredits some theories of international communication. Nollywood confirms the modernization theory by helping to globalize Nigeria through films and soap operas that promote Western styles. However, it also displays aspects of dependency theory by imitating Western filming styles rather than preserving Nigerian cultural values. Nollywood cannot be said to fully practice the social responsibility theory as content is decided by filmmakers without public input. While Nollywood has increased Nigeria's visibility, it often portrays negative stereotypes that can damage the country's international image. The industry should make movies that showcase Nigeria in a more positive light on global issues.
