• Highways in Bunyan's time?
• Isa 35:8 A highway will be there, a roadway, And it will be called the Highway
of Holiness. The unclean will not travel on it, But it will be for him who walks that
way, And fools will not wander on it.
• Walls of Salvation
• Isa 60:18 Violence will not be heard again in your land, Nor devastation or
destruction within your borders; But you will call your walls salvation, and your
gates praise.

• No effort on the part of Christian was req'd!
• For by grace you have been saved through faith;
and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not
as a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Eph 2:8-9
• What caused his burden for fall off his back?
• Why didn't it fall off at the Wicket Gate?

• Why then does Christian retain his burden so long?
 Barry Horner states, 'This convert does not have an extensive
understanding of the doctrine of Christ or the atonement or the
gospel.
 But he does confess the misery of his burden, and he does
hear and respond to the invitation of Good Will to enter the
Wicket-gate, that is,
 "If any man is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink" (John 7:37,
cf. Matt. 7:13).
 Hence, upon entry Christian "rejoices and trembles" (Ps. 2:11),
for he has passed from death unto life (John 5:24).

• Could it be a lack of Biblical knowledge?
• I have a friend named Sam who for years has practiced meditation. He
used to be part of a cult--an Eastern religion that promised inner
tranquility. It was supposed to make one serene, confident, joyful. But
Sam admitted his meditations resulted in none of those things. As he
sat for hours in jeans and bare feet--chanting and meditating—a
disturbing question tugged at his heart. What about my sin? The Navigators

• Big clue given in Ch 15, pg 62, when Christian is at
the Palace Beautiful, recalling his journey so far:

• Isa 45:22 “Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the
earth; For I am God, and there is no other.
• John 3:14-15 14 “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the
wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; 15
so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.
• Matt 11:28-30 “Come to Me, all who are weary and
heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. “Take My yoke upon
you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in
heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS.
“For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

• Christian now understands the work
of the cross in a far more
comprehensive and profound way,
as if he had begun to really
understand the heart of Romans,
Galatians, Ephesians, and Hebrews.

• Justification?
• Redemption?
• Propitiation?
• Atonement?
• Sanctification?
• Glorification?

22 even the righteousness of God through faith in
Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no
distinction; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the
glory of God, 24 being justified as a gift by His grace
through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; 25
whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His
blood atonement through faith. Rom 3:22-25

22 We are made right in God's sight when we trust in Jesus Christ to
take away our sins. And we all can be saved in this same way, no
matter who we are or what we have done. 23 For all have sinned; all
fall short of God's glorious standard. 24 Yet now God in his gracious
kindness declares us not guilty. He has done this through Christ
Jesus, who has feed us by taking away our sins. 25 For God sent
Jesus to take the punishment for our sins and to satisfy God's anger
against us. We are made right with God when we believe that Jesus
shed his blood, sacrificing his life for us. Rom 3:22-25 (1977)
• Perfect cleansing (wiped clean) of the sinner's record through
applying the righteousness of Christ to the sinner's account

• Freedom from sin's bondage through the payment of a price. God
has incurred great cost in delivering us.
• "Cost us nothing, but cost God everything!"

• Appeasement of the wrath our guilt provokes

• Substitutionary/vicarious sacrifice – Jesus the Lamb of God
• God voluntarily became our substitutionary sacrifice

• Why the tomb?
• Because the empty tomb of Jesus is guarantee
that the Father has accepted all that the Son has
provided.
• It is the guarantee, it is the affirmation that
everything Jesus said, everything that Jesus has
ever done is wholly acceptable to our glorious
Father in heaven. Derek Thomas
• 1 Cor 15:17 if Christ has not been raised, your
faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.

Few sentences outside Scripture are so widely known or so deeply loved as these:
Phi 3:8-9 8 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value
of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and
count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, 9 and may be found in Him, not
having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through
faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith

• 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to
us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written: “I will destroy
the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” 20 Where
is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of
this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the
wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased
through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.
1Cor 1:18-21 (NIV2)

Live a good life. If there are gods and they are
just, then they will not care how devout you
have been, but will welcome you based on the
virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but
unjust, then you should not want to worship
them. If there are no gods, then you will be
gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live
on in the memories of your loved ones.

• Now as he stood looking and weeping, behold three Shining Ones angels
approached and saluted him with the benediction, “Let peace be upon you.”

 Negative Justification – The Forgiveness of Sins
(Judicial declaration concerning Christian's burden)
 Rom 8:1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ
Jesus.
 Rom 4:7-8 7 “BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE LAWLESS DEEDS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN,
AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED. 8 “BLESSED IS THE MAN WHOSE SIN THE
LORD WILL NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT.”
 Eph 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our
trespasses, according to the riches of His grace
 Phlm 1:18 But if he has wronged you in any way or owes you anything, charge
that to my account;

 Positive Justification – Garment of Christ's Righteousness
(Judicial declaration concerning Christian's standing)
 Isa 64:6 For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And
all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us
wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
 Isa 61:10 I will rejoice greatly in the LORD, My soul will exult in
my God; For He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He
has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom
decks himself with a garland, And as a bride adorns herself with
her jewels.
 1Cor 1:30 But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who
became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and
sanctification, and redemption

• A Mark on his Forehead?
• Given to true children of God who sigh
and moan over unrighteousness in the
world, and as a consequence are
preserved from divine judgment
 Rev 22:4 they will see His face, and His
name will be on their foreheads.

A Sealed Roll for his Journey
 Eph 1:13-14 In Him, you also, after
listening to the message of truth, the gospel
of your salvation–having also believed, you
were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of
promise, who is given as a pledge of our
inheritance, with a view to the redemption of
God’s own possession, to the praise of His
glory.

1. Who grants forgiveness?
 It is the Father's prerogative to speak the word of pardon; it is His sovereign
choice to speak it only at the Cross.
2. Who strips and clothes anew?
 This is represented as the act of Christ, the Second Person of
the Trinity, because is the "the righteousness of Christ imputed
to us, and received by faith alone."
3. Who seals and marks?
 there are two gifts here, bestowed by the Holy Spirit, and that
these two are very different.

• There is an outward mark which all men can distinguish; also,
there is a private Roll, open to no human eyes but the
pilgrim's.
• But the solid foundation that God has laid cannot be shaken;
and on it are written these words: “The Lord knows those
who are his” and “Those who say that they belong to the Lord
must turn away from wrongdoing.” 2Tim 2:19 (GNB)
• One of the inscriptions is for God's own reading; the other is
for man's.
• God alone has to do with the one; our brother-men can
recognize the other.
• The one is His private seal; the other is to be read and known
of all men.
• Thus Scripture and Bunyan unite to impress this truth upon
our memory, that each true disciple must carry with him a
twofold evidence of what has befallen him at Calvary — the
secret witness of the Holy Spirit in the heart; and the outward
mark upon the life of a changed mind and character. Maltese Website

In Ch 12 – Christian ascends the hill Difficulty

In Ch 13 – Christian approached by Timorous and Mistrust

In Ch 15 – Christian resides at the Palace Beautiful

In Ch 35 – Christian & Hopeful are welcomed into Heaven

• Sounds like something we could very much use and hope to have.
• Something to which we can read from often for comfort, encouragement,
refreshment for we very often are in need of these very things.
• Something which we should guard over carefully since it appears that it is
possible to lose it, at least for a time.
 "The roll is the call of God in your life, as you sense that and look at that then the
wonders of God's word are opened up to you, and they amaze you and excite you, and
make you so happy that you run faster for heaven. And each time you look into that call
of God in your life his word is speaking to you, and you are being thrilled so that you
should do this often for refreshment. But if you are lazy, slothful, and sinning you can
lose that sense of the call of God in your life. It becomes dull to you, you look and it's
not there because of sin. So you need to go back in your thoughts to the place where
you lost it and through all that laziness and sloth and sin, repenting of it, sorry for it and
find again God's call in your life. And once more have the wonders of God's word
opened up to you and making you happy and excited so that you run fast for heaven

• Christian was under conviction of sin, but he had no assurance that he was a
believer. Was he a Christian? Was he not a Christian? He wasn’t sure.
• This chapter contains one of the most important events in the whole book. Here
we are figuratively shown, the happy effect of faith, as to the believer’s
conscience; or the way in which he obtains deliverance from guilt. The pilgrim
was certainly a Christian when he entered the Wicket-Gate, but he was not a
joyful and happy Christian, till he arrived at the cross.
• A person in the first act of coming to Christ, and for some time after may have an
oppressive sense of the guilt of his sins. Maltese Website
 15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have
received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit
Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, heirs
also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we
may also be glorified with Him. Rom 8:15-17
