This document presents a pipelined architecture for 2D discrete cosine transform (DCT), quantization, and zigzag processing for JPEG image compression implemented on an FPGA. The 2D-DCT is computed using separability into two 1D-DCTs separated by a transpose buffer. A quantizer divides each DCT coefficient by a value from a quantization table stored in ROM. A zigzag buffer reorders the coefficients in zigzag format. The design was synthesized to Xilinx Spartan-3E FPGA and achieved a maximum frequency of 101.35MHz, processing an 8x8 block in 6604ns with a pipeline latency of 140 cycles.
