GOTHIC HORROR
The sub-genre we have chosen is gothic horror and in our research we have found
out the majority of gothic horror films made have the same theme of the
paranormal/supernatural, the dead, zombies, set in graveyards, abandoned places
etc.
Also, these films tend to be old-fashioned or set in an old time period (when
gothic horror was invented or later, but never 21st century). For our film, we’re
going to challenge this convention by making our film more modern and include
more current things. E.g. using current music in the film .
Conventions we will use are the use of dark colours and we will stick to the
supernatural aspect and having a female as the typical victim in horror films.
Our target audience is boys and girls aged 12+
who are into and like watching gothic horror
films - both modern and old-fashioned.
Horror films our target audience tend to watch are
old and have aspects of the paranormal and
supernatural. They like horror films that are often
based on supposed “true” stories.
Majority of our audience like to be scared when
watching a horror film or have a similar impact
so we will in cooperate that when making our
film.
TARGET
AUDIENCE
SYNOPSIS
The plot of our film revolves around a teenage girl who falls into a neverending
nightmare, trapped with a supernatural being (vampire-llke beast). Our film
ends with this girl seen being attacked by this being and supposedly made
unconscious. But when she wakes up she is completely alone and isolated in the
very same place she has been all along but her surrounding looks completely
dull. It’s after this we find out that she is actually still stuck in her nightmare and
in real life she is physically dead – the cause, strangulation. The same way her
younger brother died exactly a year ago.
LOCATION
We’ve decided to keep the location of our film minimal so we can focus
more on the effects, camera shots in the film and creating the evil character
which we might resort to using the green screen quite often.
The setting of the film will be based at the main character’s house and a
short scene shown outside at a graveyard– maybe at an actual graveyard
or we will recreate that setting by creating a fake headstone for the main
character.
We will make sure that just because we are using limited amount of
locations it won’t affect our film and make it seem boring. We plan on filming
in our chosen house from different angles, directions and using different
camera shots to create an eery atmosphere and build up tension.
CHARACTERS
So far, the characters we have included are:
• A teenage girl, aged 16, ends up as victim
• A toddler, deceased for a year, aged 2, the younger
brother of the girl
• The supernatural being – “vampire” which is the
villain in the film
• Parents - grief stricken mother and father who are
confused as to how their children’s cause of death
happened
CONFLICT
The conflict will be between the girl and the vampire.
The girl is trying to get away from the vampire as she
thinks it is trying to kill her.
CLIMAX
The climax of our film will be when the girl is trying to escape
the hands the vampire following her.
RISING ACTION
The girl is running trying to escape from the vampire but
when she is unable to she can’t escape.
THE ENDING
The ending of our film shows that the teenage girl died and we see this from a
shot of her headstone. However, there will be a scene in the end where she
wakes up. As she recovers she walks around her house and finds a card which
reads “may (name) rest in peace”. This is when she realises she is actually
dead.
RECURRING SYMBOL
The young teenage girl will be seen in the beginning of
the film looking into a locket which contains a picture of
her little brother. This will be significant as in the film it
will be the death anniversary of the brother and the girl
dies the same way her brother did and on the same day.
In the very last scene of the film we plan on having a
shot of the locket on the floor opened showing a clear
picture of her brother.
INFLUENCES
Our influence is mostly stemmed from these themes – supernatural and
the paranormal. We’ve used Dracula as the main influence for the villain
in our film as vampires are typically portrayed as villains.
FRAKENSTEIN: The most famous gothic example of
dreams
DRACULA: Inspirational to make the villain in our film a
vampire
THE SIXTH SENSE: The idea where the main character
doesn’t realise that they’re dead
1. supernatural element - the villain
2. Sticking to the use of dark colours – beginning of the film
3. Creating the sense of mystery and dread
4. Weather – storms and rain in the beginning before character falls
into nightmare
5. Sounds – creepy, unsettling, sting
2 UNUSUAL THINGS WE HAVE INCLUDED…
One thing we’ve included in our film
which we think is unusual for the
genre is having current music played
IN film. For example, the character
plays a nasty Justin Bieber song just
to emphasise the fact it is a teenage
girl
Majority of the film will take
place in a house
CLASSIFICATION
Our film will be classified 12A as we do not consider it to be too disturbing as a
horror film. There is no violence that will be shown in the film, only speculated.
Our film avoids topics such as sexual content, discrimination, strong language,
imitable behaviour and drugs. We are absolutely sure that there is no content in
our film which would be considered unsuitable for our audience or upset them -
to which we will ensure them that the film is completely fictional.
CAMERA SHOTS
HIGH ANGLE: This will be used frequently to emphasise the vulnerability of the girl and to
also add the suspicion that she is being watched by the villain.
GROUND LEVEL SHOTS: There quite a few ground level shots. For example, a shot of the
locket on the floor in the closing scene of the end of the film.
OVER-THE-SHOULDER SHOT: This will only be used once when we last see an
appearance by the vampire.
MID SHOT: This will be used in a scene where we see a quick glimpse of the vampire’s
eyes in the dark.
DUTCH TILT: We will use this when the female character is running in the house trying to
get away from what’s chasing her. This will make everything seem unbalanced and fast
paced.
EDITING IDEAS
FADE (out to black) - To indicate the ending of the film.
VISUAL EFFECTS – For the villain we want to make it look really unnatural so we have a
visual image of the villain having the figure of a man exuding smoke – the lower part of the
body will be unrecognisable as it will consist of heavy black smoke.
JUMP CUTS – These will be used frequently in our film to show the disorientation of the girl.
Also, we will use it to represent paranoia.
FLASHBACK – Before the girl wakes up she has a flashback of her brother
SLOW MOTION – This will be used in a flashback
DIGITAL EFFECTS – We want to use this when the female character wakes up and her
surrounding looks dull and for the villain.
