- 2. Introduction At age 30, Kristin Gaspar became the youngest member of the city council of Encinitas, a California community north of San Diego. Four years later, Kristin Gaspar won the first-ever election for mayor of the city of some 60,000. Gaspar supports nonprofits such as PlanSea.org, an organization whose long-range mission focuses on the environmental health of oceans. Headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii, the group produces educational videos for Internet distribution in a series known as My Beach Report. The half-hour show includes segments made by teenage videographers for an audience of their peers.
- 3. PlanSea.org These three- to six-minute videos are part of an effort to spread awareness of the importance of the world's oceans to its environment and economic prosperity. PlanSea.org became the first provider of ocean images to the Google Earth project. PlanSea.org took the concept of going green to another level, “going blue,” with an hour-long documentary, PlanSeaTV. The show emphasized the importance of good stewardship of the sea's resources. Its producers have also shared the show via children's hospitals, after-school television presentations, and U.S. military TV networks.
