for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery or the American

 Are you certified by the American Board of
Plastic Surgery?
 Where and how will you perform my
procedure?
 Do you have hospital privileges to perform
my procedure? If so, at which hospitals?

 Is the surgical facility accredited by a
nationally or state-recognized accrediting
agency? Or is it state-licensed or Medicare-
certified?
 What will be expected of me to get the best
results?
 What is the length of the recovery period
and what kind of recovery help will I need?
 Are there alternative procedures I could
consider and what are the pros and cons?

 Who on your staff will be performing my
procedure and what are their qualifications?
 What risks and complications are associated
with my procedure and how are they
handled?
 What are my options if I am dissatisfied with
the outcome?
 Do you have before and after photos that
illustrate this procedure and show results
that are reasonable for me to expect?

 Anyone with a medical
degree can claim to be
qualified to perform
cosmetic procedures
 Very important first step:
select a qualified plastic
surgeon you trust
 Choose a member of the
American Society for
Aesthetic Plastic Surgery or
an ASPS Member surgeon

 Are board-certified by the American
Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal

 Complete at least 5 years of surgical training
following medical school, with a minimum of two
years of plastic surgery residency training
 Successfully pass rigorous written an oral
examinations administered by the ABPS Or RCPSC
 Complete continuing medical education, including
patient safety training each year

 Also known as SmartLipo, Smart
Liposuction, Laser Liposuction, Laser Body
Sculpting
 Uses laser energy to liquefy fat before it is
removed via a small tube
 Some practitioner don’t remove the melted
fat, allowing it to be absorbed by the body


 Hotly debated by doctors
 Be sure to do your homework before you go
 Expert opinions and real peoples’ reviews
 Talk to someone who has had it if possible
 Your outcome and safety depend on finding
a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and NOT
the machine used
 Recovery and pain associated with it may
take longer because the fat in the protective
sheaths around the nerves is also melted

 There is no long-term difference in the skin
tightness
 There is no scientific evidence that Smart
Lipo gives better results than traditional
liposuction


 They are simply silicone breast implants that are
more highly cohesive than their predecessors
 More cohesive = tends to retain its shape and feel
firm
 Anatomically shaped and have a textured surface (as
compared to smooth-surfaced implants)
 Anatomic shape may be helpful in cases where there
is very little to no breast tissue


 Good for extremely small breasts as well as
someone who has undergone removal of
breast for cancer treatment
 For women who already have a nice shape
but simply prefer additional volume, this
type is NOT indicated
 If the implant is not placed properly within
the breast pocket, it can actually rotate
during the early healing period and lead to
an unacceptable appearance

 More commonly used smooth, round gel
implants will not cause problems if they shift
since their rounded shape is even all the way
around and there is no specific orientation
 Some studies have found the shape of the
round implants to appear more natural than
those created in an anatomical shape


 Your own blood is drawn from the blood in your
arm and then spun in a centrifuge to separate
out the platelets (Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix or
PRFM)
 The processed blood is then injected into the
face with the hope of stimulating new collagen
production
 Selphyl, as the system is called, debuted in 2009
 Unproven claims that the results will last two
years.


 It’s hard to tell if it is an effective filler for
hollowed out cheeks and wrinkles
 Lack of clinical research proving the efficacy
of Selphyl
 To date, the FDA has not approved or
cleared PRFM=derived in a Selphyl
centrifuge to be marketed for facial
rejuvenation
