[3] - Most active volcanoes are located along the coastlines of western South America and eastern Asia, (especially Indonesia and Japan). - There are a few active volcanoes in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean / there are some clusters of active volcanoes in the eastern and south-eastern region of Africa. - Majority of the active volcanoes are found in places with earthquake activity, around the Pacific Ocean. 2 Using an annotated diagram, describe the internal structure of the Earth. [5] 1 mark for correctly drawn and matched characteristic of each layer: - Crust: basalt and granite rocks, few km to 70 km thick - Mantle: mostly solid rock, 2900km thick and between 800oC and 3000oC - Outer core: liquid layer, 2100km thick - Inner core: solid layer, 1400km thick - Full core: mostly iron and nickel material, 3000oC to 5000oC 3 Compare between the Earth’s inner core and outer core. [3] - Both the inner and outer core are made up of mostly iron and nickel. - The inner core is solid while the outer core is liquid. - The inner core is thinner at 1400km thick while the outer core is thicker at 2100km thick.
