Polar climate regions are found at the North and South poles and are characterized by long, cold winters with very little precipitation. They have average temperatures below 10°C year-round. Two main types are tundra climate, which has at least one month above 0°C, allowing some plants to grow, and ice cap climate, where no month rises above freezing and only ice exists. Locations include coastal Greenland with tundra climate and Antarctica which has a predominant ice cap climate. Fauna in the regions have adapted thick fur/feathers and ability to maintain body heat.
Polar Climate Region
•“Polar regions are deserts of ice and snow , swept by
powerful winds.”
• 20% of earth consists of polar regions
• Average range of temperature is less then 10֯C.

Facts
• Polar regionsare found in north and south poles of
Earth.
• Average rain fall is less than 250mm per year.
• Temperature range is -88 to 10֯C
7.
Types
• Two typesof polar climate regions.
• Tundra climate
• Ice cap climate
Alpine climate
8.
Tundra climate
• Atleast one month whose average temperature is above
0ºC.
• No trees can grow here
• Some specialized plans can grow.
9.
Ice cap climate
•No month of year contain temperature above 0ºC.
• No plants can grow
• Ice layer remain throughout the year.
10.
Alpine climate
• Itcan mimic either tundra or ice cap climate.
• Present at high altitudes.
• No month has an average temperature of 10º or higher.

Arctic owls
Snowy owl
Polar bears
Reindeer

General properties offauna
• Animals of polar climate region contain following
general properties
Warm blooded animals
Maintain body temperature
some contain fur and feathers

“ together in groups for protection from wind”.
