Anthraquinone can be prepared through two methods: 1) air oxidation of anthracene or 2) Friedel-Craft condensation of phthalic anhydride with benzene in the presence of aluminum chloride. Anthraquinone can be reduced to anthracene by distillation with zinc dust or to other derivatives like anthrone or dianthryl through reduction with tin and hydrochloric acid. It can also be nitrated to form 1-nitro-anthraquinone or sulphonated to form alpha-anthraquinone-sulfonic acid or beta-anthraquinone-sulfonic acid depending on the reaction conditions.
