Population
Population Demography - the statistical study of the human population according to its composition, condition, and distribution at a certain moment in time, or in respect to its historical evolution.
World Population Currently, at the beginning of the 21st century, the world is populated by almost 7 billion people! The world population has grown at different rates throughout history, sometimes growing rapidly and other times very slowly. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-15391515
Population Growth During the Neolithic revolution, when food became more abundant and reliable due to agriculture, the world population increased from 5 million to 250 million at the beginning of our age. The population increased again in the 19th century during the Industrial Revolution because of advances in medicine and sanitation. During the 20th century, the population began to double every 25 years.
Population Growth Population Explosion: the rapid growth of the population due to a high number of births and a sudden decrease in the number of deaths.
The Density of Population The density of population is the relation between the population of a place and the space occupied by it. Density of population is calculated by dividing the number of inhabitants (people) by the surface area. The number equals inhabitants per square kilometer. Example: If the population is 155,000 and the surface area is 62,000 square kilometers, the Density of Population = ? Density of Population = 155,000/62,000 = 2.5 inhabitants per square kilometer
World Population Distribution The distribution of the world population is unequal. Some areas are highly (densely) populated while other areas have a low (sparse) population. The density of the population in an area depends on different factors such as the climate, natural resources, industrialization, etc.
Densely Populated Areas There are 4 major areas in the world that are the most densely populated. They are: Eastern U.S., Europe, India, and China
Densely Populated Areas Eastern U.S. and Europe are densely populated areas because of the Industrial Revolution. India and China are densely populated areas due to their rich agricultural resources.
Sparsely Populated Areas There are three different categories of areas in the world that are sparsely populated. 1) Areas that are found in the far northern or southern regions of the world: Southern Argentina, Northern Russia, Canada. These are very cold regions and the ground is continually frozen, preventing plants from being able to grow.
Sparsely Populated Areas 2) Areas located in desert regions: Sahara, Northern China, Australia 3) Areas of rainforest: Amazon These areas lack resources of water, agriculture, and livestock These areas are filled with thick, wild vegetation
Moderately Populated Areas In the center of Africa and in Indonesia the density of the population is moderate. Although there are rain forests located in these regions, these areas also enjoy a better climate due to the mountains that surround the region. This allows the planting and growing of crops.
