Poster and magazine
proposal
In these posters, it
is dark around the
border and there
is a spotlight on
the doll.
The title of the films
are written in red.
This would symbolize
the horror genre
which these films
share.
The font of
this title
makes it
seem as if it
has been
scratched.
This suggests
a trouble,
danger, a
thrill
Poster mock up
This poster features the doll which is the antagonist in the film. In
other films such as chucky and annabelle, where the villain has been
a doll, the doll has been the main focus of the film’s poster.
There is a slight tint of red which was inspired by a shot in the trailer,
chucky, where there was a red tint over the shot of the doll which
symbolizes danger. Furthermore there is a vinete around the border
which creates a spotlight focusing on the doll showing its significance
in the film.
The title is written in red. The posters for annabelle and chucky also
have their titles written in red. This tells the audience that the film will
be in the genre of horror.
I have chosen this font for the title as it looks like it is written in chalk
which is associated with children, playfulness and innocence.
To improve, i would reduce the head space, either zoom in closer or
zoom out so that there is equal space around the doll because in this
mock up the feet are very close to the border. I would also increase
the contrast to make the doll stand out a bit more
The positioning of the doll suggest vulnerability
and Innocence
A red tint suggest evil and horror genre
The title font is in chalk writing, suggest children in
the film. The red colour suggest horror genre
One eye is hidden suggest the doll has another
identity. This idea is inspired by ‘ID magazine’,
although it is a fashion magazine, it plays on the
idea of identity which is a theme in our film as on
of our characters gets possessed into a doll.
Inspired by the poster of Annabelle I cropped the photo into a half face.
This idea fit well with theme of the film- a child trapped inside a doll, which
is why there is only half the face in the frame. It shows this doll is not what
it seems.
The title is blue to match the eye colour.
The release date on the poster. This date will be changed to the summer
as further research shows that slasher and thriller films are released
during the halloween time period. Horror films are released during the
summer in time for the summer holidays where teens will have more time
to go to the cinema.
The doll on the poster is the doll the protagonist is possessed in. similarly
to annabelle and chucky posters which features the dolls on the poster
instead of a character played by a human.
A close up shot for the poster
This is not a successful draft of the poster. The
angle of which the image is taken from is
straightforward. This does not create much of an
impact for the audience. The lighting does not
have a large impact on persuading the audience
to go an watch the film.
The overall vibe of this poster is bland.
Poster proposal
The poster will feature the doll. This is because the other films in
the same genre and share the same themes as The dollhouse
feature the antagonist doll in their poster.
The poster will have a spotlight on the doll and it will have a dark
background. The lighting will be warm or there will be an under
lighting. This gives a clue to the audience that the doll is the
antagonist, a mischievous evil character.
The title will be written in red as it will let the audience know that
this is a horror film. The font of the title will be written in a chalk
font to suggest the doll theme in the film. The font was inspired
by the film, you're next.
Magazines
Thes magazine covers feature the antagonist of the film. Magazines end to feature the actors a opposed to the doll.
These covers are
a close up shot of
the antagonist’s
face
These images of the covers are taken
from a high angle, the model’s chins
are often down.
First draft of our magazine cover
This cover features the doll in the trailer for The dollhouse. This is
consistent with other horror film magazine covers a they also feature the
antagonist on the cover
The title of the film and the name of the magazine is written in red to
indicate to the audience that this is a horror film
This draft does not have too much writing on the cover. It also does not
advertise any articles which may be in this issue of the magazine or
other similar films he audience may enjoy. This brings all the attention to
the doll and this film.
Conversely to other covers, this cover is shot in a dark room with under
lighting. Real magazine covers are usually shot with an overhead
spotlight or bright studio lights. We decided to shoot this image with this
particular lighting because it sets the creates the right mood for the film.
The doll has a round innocent face, blue eyes and is wearing a beach
hat. The lighting is a juxtaposition to tell the audience that this is not the
protagonist.
This cover challenges other real magazine covers.
1. It features two subjects, one of the dolls is not significantly featured in
the trailer, however there are two girls that are featured in the trailer.
2. There is a lot of head space, usually the subject takes up the whole
cover
3. The heading is not bold and bright, it usually touches the model’s head
(is either partially hidden behind the model’s head or placed over the
model’s head)
4. The lighting is brighter on the head space. It is darker on the face.
Magazine covers usually highlight the face.
5. This cover is shot in a landscape composition.
However,some features which make this magazine cover successful is;
1. One doll had a brown hat as opposed to a white bonnet. This suggest
that something will taint this character. The doll with the brown straw hat
seems to be more prominent in the frame which suggests that
something significant happens to this character in the film.
2. The writing is written in red which suggest that this is a horror film.
3. The magazine is offering sneak peak exclusives inside the magazine.
This persuaded that consumer to purchase the magazine to see what is
inside.
Refined magazine cover
This cover has been edited to rectify the
elements which challenged traits of real
magazine covers for horror films.
1. The lighting has been brightened on
the dolls’ faces.
2. The title is now bold and bright red. It
also slightly covers the dolls hats.
3. The head space has been reduced.
We have decided to keep two dolls on the
cover as there are two main characters in
the film.
