NETWORKING?
It is an emerging technology.
It is also called as Broad band
over power line(BPL)
Method of home networking to
share printers,internet,etc.
Uses existing ac wiring and
power outlets.

simultaneously used for electricity

Thus cost effective and one of the
best means of networking

SCOPES
 Imagine networking your PCs, laptops, printers,
cable/DSL modem, etc. by simply plugging them
into power outlets
 Imagine repositioning your wireless AP for
improved reception by simply moving a device the
size of a deck of cards to a different outlet
 Imaging streaming HDTV from DVD/PVR/set-top
box to any display without adding new wires
 Imagine moving your telephone to any location by
changing where it is plugged in

TYPES OF BPL
 In house BPL
 -Electrical wiring is to network computers and
devices within a building.
 Access BPL
 It is a technology that provides broadband access
over medium voltage power lines.

FREQUENCY
 Most BPL systems are designed to operate in the
frequency spectrum from 1.705MHz to 30MHz,but
occasionally upto 80 MHz using power distribution
network lines

HOW BROAD BAND OVER POWER LINES
OPERATES
 It operates by impressing a modulated carrier signal
on the wiring system
 Accessing BPL consists of :
 Injectors :BPL signals may be injected onto HV
power lines with injectors
 Extractors : provide interface between the medium
power lines and the customers.BPL extractors are
usually located at each LV distribution transformer
feeding a group of homes
 Repeaters :for long runs of HV power
lines,repeaters are employed to maintain the
required signal strength.

The signal is received by a power line
modem that plugs into the wall.
BPL modems use silicon chipsets specially
designed to handle the work load of pulling
data out of an electric current.
BPL modem has roughly the size of a
common
power adapter.
 It plugs into a common wall socket, and an
Ethernet cable running to your computer
finishes the connection
