During pregnancy, eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, calcium-rich foods, lean proteins and healthy fats is important for both mother and baby's health. While extra calories are not needed, small, frequent meals may help with nausea. Supplements of folic acid before and during early pregnancy, and iron throughout pregnancy are also recommended. Exercise is encouraged, but check with your doctor; and smoking, excess caffeine and certain foods like raw fish, soft cheeses and deli meats should be limited or avoided. Attending antenatal classes provides valuable guidance on nutrition and other aspects of pregnancy.
