Grammaticalization is the process by which words representing objects and actions become grammatical markers like affixes or prepositions. It occurs as nouns and verbs develop over time into grammatical items. An example is "let us" becoming the auxiliary "let's". Grammaticalization was introduced as a term by Antoine Meillet to investigate how autonomous words transition to grammatical elements. It involves the development of syntax from discourse, grammaticalization of lexical items, clause combining, and subjectification.
