Plate Tectonics: Earth's Dynamic Crust
Introduction to Plate
Tectonics
● Earth's outer layer (lithosphere) is divided
into large slabs called tectonic plates
● Plates move slowly over time, driven by
heat from Earth's interior
● Plate movement causes earthquakes,
volcanoes, and mountain formation
● How do you think the continents looked
millions of years ago?
Types of Plate
Boundaries
● Convergent: Plates move towards each
other
● Divergent: Plates move away from each
other
● Transform: Plates slide past each other
● Can you think of any famous geological
features caused by plate movements?
Convergent Boundaries
● Occurs when two plates collide
● Can form mountains (e.g., Himalayas, Andes)
● May create deep ocean trenches
● Can you name a mountain range near where you live?
Divergent Boundaries
● Plates move apart from each other
● Creates new crust as magma rises to fill
the gap
● Forms mid-ocean ridges (e.g., Mid-
Atlantic Ridge)
● Why do you think new crust forms at
these boundaries?
Transform Boundaries
● Plates slide past each other horizontally
● Can cause earthquakes (e.g., San
Andreas Fault)
● No new crust is formed or destroyed
● How might living near a transform
boundary affect people's daily lives?
Evidence for Plate Tectonics
● Jigsaw fit of continents (e.g., South America and Africa)
● Similar rock formations and fossils on different continents
● Seafloor spreading and magnetic striping
● If you could travel back in time, how would Earth look different?
Seafloor Spreading
● New oceanic crust forms at mid-ocean
ridges
● Older crust moves away from the ridge
● Explains why oceans are relatively young
compared to continents
● Why do you think the oldest rocks are
found on continents, not in oceans?
Plate Tectonics and
Volcanoes
● Many volcanoes form at plate boundaries
● "Ring of Fire" around the Pacific Ocean
● Underwater volcanoes can create new
islands
● Can you name any famous volcanoes?
Where are they located?
Plate Tectonics and Earthquakes
● Earthquakes often occur at plate boundaries
● Can be caused by sudden plate movements
● Measured using the Richter scale (magnitude)
● Have you ever experienced an earthquake? What was it like?
The Future of Plate
Tectonics
● Plates continue to move today
● Scientists predict future continental
positions
● New supercontinents may form in millions
of years
● How do you think Earth might look 250
million years from now?
