Introduction:-
• Human evolution is a process of change by which people originated from Ape like
ancestors.
• Homo sapiens is the most prominent species on earth Is the result of over 7 million
year of evolution.
• The traces of human evolution Have been obtained through fossil records And
morphological ,Physiological And embryological Studies.
• The Animal Homo Sapiens belongs to family Hominidae and sub order Anthropoida
of the order Primates.
Systematic position of
man in Animal Kingdom:
• Kingdom: Animalia (all animals)
• Subkingdom: Metazoa ( all animal with multicelled structure)
• Phylum: Chordata
• Subphylum: Vertebrate
• Class: Mammalia
• Order: Primate
• Suborder: Anthropoidea
• Family: Hominidae
• Genus: Homo
• Species: Sapiens
Evolution of man:
Dryopithecus
• It is considered as common ancestors of man and apes.
• Dryopithecus is considered as direct ancestor of modern
day apes.
• They have semi erect posture, thick hair, U shaped Jaws,
larger and sharper teeth and were vegetarian.
• They walked on 4 legs and their forelimbs were Longer than
hind limbs.
• They were forest dweller and spent most of the time on tree.
Ramapithecus:
• Fossil discovered from Siwalik hills in India.
• More men like ( human like).
Australopithecus:
• Prof Raymond Dart discovered a fossil of skull 5-6 years
old baby from the Pleistocene rock of Thang region ( South
Africa) and named it Thang baby . Later he renamed it as A.
Africanus (African Ape man).
• 2million year ago Australopithecines probably lived in East
African grasslands.
• Evidence shows they hunted with stone weapons but
essentially ate fruits.
• It is also considered as connecting link between apes and
man.
Homohabitis:
• First human like being.
• First man who made tools of stone for hunting animal hence
called as first tool maker man or Handy man.
• They probably did not eat meat.
• The brain capacity were between 650-800cc.
• Its fossil were discovered by Dr Leakey from 2 million years
old rock in Africa.
• They lived in caves.
Homo erectus:
• They existed about 1.7 million year ago.
• They had large brain with a cranial capacity around 900cc.
• They were cave dwellers and probably ate meat.
• Used fire and also migrated to Asia and Europe.
• Also known as Jaw men or packing man.
Neanderthal man:
• They lived in Europe and Asia between 100,000- 40,000
years back.
• They had a brain size of 1400cc( same as modern human).
• They used hides( skin of animals) to protect their body.
• They lived in huts and omnivore in nature.
• Development of speech centre and language started.
Homofossilis:
• Origin and Evolution 50,000- 10,000 year ago.
• Fossil discovered by Mac. Gregor from Cro-Magnon rock of
France.
• They had cranial capacity of 1650cc ( maximum).
• The Cro-Magnon people left behind very elaborate cave
paintings showing the attainment of a form of culture.
Homo sapiens Sapiens :
• During ice age between 75000-10,000 year ago modern Homo
Sapiens arose.
• It arose in Africa and moved across continents .
• This is the man of today having a brain capacity of 1300- 1600
( avg-1450cc).
• This man has well develop chin , face, circular jaw , speech
centre.
• Omnivore by nature.
• Agriculture was also started by this man. Agriculture came
around 10,000 years back.
