This document provides an overview of how to modify a SIOP lesson plan on nocturnal and diurnal animals to meet the needs of English learners at different proficiency levels. It first introduces SIOP and its connection to English language proficiency standards. It then describes the SIOP components and lesson plan. Next, it details how to build background knowledge and provide comprehensible input for students at proficiency levels from pre-emergent to high intermediate. Suggestions include using visuals, modeling, and asking level-appropriate questions. The goal is to help teachers design inclusive lessons that develop both content knowledge and English skills.
