Source
• Propranolol hydrochloride is a synthetic beta-adrenergic receptor-blocking
agent chemically described as 2-Propanol, and synthesized by 1-[(1-
methylethyl)amino]-3-(1-naphthalenyloxy)-, hydrochloride,(±)-.
Propranolol Pronunciation
• Generic Name: propranolol (pro PRAN oh lol)
• Brand Names: Hemangeol, Inderal LA, Inderal XL, InnoPran XL, Inderal
• Dosage Form: capsule, extended release, Tablet.
Propranolol
Structure
Mechanism
Propranolol
Selectively blocks the β1-receptor in heart.
Decreases force of contraction and heart rate and cardiac output.
Decreases blood pressure.
Mechanism
Propranolol
Inhibits vasomotor conduction.
Decreases sympathetic discharge.
Vasodilation.
Decreases blood pressure.
Mechanism
propranolol
Selectively blocks the β1-receptor in kidney.
Decreases renin secretion.
Decreases the effects of renin angiotensin system.
Decreases blood pressure.
Pharmacological effect
• The levorotatory isomer of propranolol binds reversibly with ß1- and ß2-
adrenoreceptors; both receptors have membrane stabilizing activity.
• Propranolol leads to a reduction of the heart rate and of the cardiac output;
initially the hypotensive effect is delayed because of peripheral vasoconstriction.
• Propranolol also increases plasma renin activity and suppresses lipolysis. In the
plasma the triglycerides increase, whereas the HDL cholesterol decreases slightly.
• The bond between propranolol and ß2-receptors causes an increase of the airway
resistance and the inhibition of glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis.
Therapeutic Uses
Propranolol is indicated for the management of various conditions, including:
Hypertension.
Angina pectoris (with the exception of variant angina).
Tachyarrhythmias.
Myocardial infarction.
Control of tachycardia/tremor associated with anxiety, hyperthyroidism.
Essential tremor.
Migraine prevention.
Cluster headache prevention.
Hyperhidrosis.
Proliferating infantile hemangioma.
Side effect

Chronic Trouble SleepingLess Severe
Feeling WeakLess Severe
Low Energy
Infrequent side effects of propranolol:
Bronchospasm Severe
Chronic Heart Failure Severe
DepressionSevere
Diarrhea
Rare side effects of propranolol:
