Proverbs on water
- 2. The King D. João V decided to build this aqueduct to bring water to the city of Lisbon. Proverb: A água faz desabar as paredes. Literal translation: The water makes the walls collapse.
- 3. Similar proverb: A drop hollows out a stone. Explanation: If you insist in doing something long enough, the desired effect will be achieved. This monumental architectural work was paid by the population of Lisbon.
- 4. This monument is a masterpiece of a military architecture in the Manueline style projected by a 16 th century architect, Francisco Arruda. A UNESCO World Heritage building. Proverb: Águas passadas não movem moinhos. Literal translation: Waters from the past do not move mills.
- 5. Similar proverb: Let bygones be bygones. Explanation: We should leave all that happened in the past, although it may be necessary to return to it. This monument has, nowadays, other interests and importance. It is no longer a fortress but a place to visit and remind the power of our country during the Portuguese Discoveries.
- 6. Riverside monument built in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry, the Navigator, promotor of the discoveries. From the top, we could enjoy views of Lisbon and the Tagus River. Proverb: Quem vai ao mar, avia-se em terra. Literal translation: Who goes to the sea, get things in land.
- 7. Similar proverb: Better safe than sorry. Explanation: It is better to be careful than to take a chance and risk an accident or a failure which you will regret. The sailors always tried to eat, drink and be merry before they went on a voyage. The navigators, during the Portuguese Discoveries, had to be prepared with supplies to make voyages by dangerous and unknown seas.
