Transformation of Healthcare
Technology into the
Commodity (Consumer)
Space
Dr. Purna Prasad
Vice President & Chief Technology Officer

1
Health Care Is Moving from Hospital to Home
• Innovation is the engine
• Commoditization is the path
• Affordable and actionable care is the benefit
2
• Innovation is inherent in humans.
• Humans possess five input sensors
and a CPU (the brain) that
communicates, processes and
draws inference about the
surroundings.
• The thinking brain is powered to
view a single phenomenon
through different perspectives.
Innovation
3
Sensing
• Contact with the external world enabled by the five I/O sensors
provide the brain with the perception of the outside world.
• The perception is the mental image.
4
The Sense of Caring
5
Care Model
Development of the Human Care Model
6
Dis-ease
• When bodies are at dis-ease,
humans need to get
information from inside the
human body.
7
Input to Actionable Outcomes
8
How do we analyze and
arrive at actionable
outcomes to ease the
pain of the body in distress?
The power of observation.
Using senses, such as
hearing and seeing to
understand these
observations.
Utilize technology to
measure observations and
provide solutions to mitigate
dis and dis-ease.
INPUT QUANTIFY ACTION

Cutting Edge Technologies Under Evaluation/Testing
• Biosensor Technology : Evaluate wearable devices to remotely and continuously
monitor and record patient vital signs to identify early signs of clinical deterioration
• Bot and AI Technology: NORA
• Drone Technology: Working in conjunction with the ED, EMS, and Security service lines
to implement drone technology in the community in advance of onsite first responders
• Surgical Theater Virtual Reality: Support patient and clinician education via a virtual
reality apparatus
• 3D Printing Prototypes : Create prototypes of research devices. Once completed, the
models are created out of a carbon based 3D printer for user testing
Biosensor Technology
25
• Provides automatic measurements for at-risk patients
in low acuity areas from the ED to the general ward
to home
• Measures key vital signs and transmits data to clinical
decision software, where care providers can be
notified about patient’s condition
• Designed to fit seamlessly into
existing Philips software systems

Editor's Notes

  • #6: Emotions inherent in humans soak in the external input and provides an empathy layer to the mental image. The sense of care flowers from this mental image. Empathy leads to care.
  • #7: Humans developed a care model by looking, hearing, touching, smelling, and tasting. This works when the bodies are at ease.
  • #8: Keen observations opened the eyes to the color of person in distress, the ears heard the breathing, the touch felt palpitations, the nose caught on to the uncomfortable smells from the disease body.
