The vast majority of biography examples are written about people who are or were famous, such as
politicians, actors, athletes, and so on.
Origin of the Modern Short Story
Who invented the modern short story?
Therefore, in many ways the true beginnings of
the modern short story are to be found in
America. One might posit the publication of
Nathaniel Hawthorne's Twice-Told Tales in 1837
as a starting point
Elements of Fiction
Setting
of a piece of literature is the time and place in which the story takes place. The definition
of setting can also include social statuses, weather, historical period, and details about immediate
surroundings. ... The setting provides the backdrop to the story and helps create mood.
RomeoandJulietSetting
It is set in Verona, Italy in the 1300s, though it was written in the 1500s. Shakespeare's Verona is
not a fleshed out place as a real-life, physical city, but rather as a convenient backdrop for a
crazy story line. ... When Romeo comes to her balcony, their two settings collide.
Plot
is a literary term used to describe the events that make up a story, or the main part of a story.
These events relate to each other in a pattern or a sequence. The structure of a novel depends on
the organization of events in the plot of the story
RomeoandJulietPlotSummary
“It is a tragic love story where the two main characters, Romeo and Juliet, are supposed to be
sworn enemies but fall in love. Due to their families' ongoing conflict, they cannot be together, so
they kill themselves because they cannot cope with being separated from one another.”
Exposition – Provides the background information needed to properly understand the story, such
as the protagonist, the antagonist, and the basic conflict of the setting.
Rising Action-The rising action of a story is the section of the plot leading up to the climax, in which
the tension stemming from the story's central conflict grows through successive plot developments.
Climax- The climax ("staircase" and "ladder") or turning point of a narrative work is its point of
highest tension and drama, or it is the time when the action starts during which the solution is
given. The climax of a story is a literary element
Character
A character is a person, animal, being, creature, or thing in a story. Writers use characters to
perform the actions and speak dialogue, moving the story along a plot line. A story can have only
one character (protagonist) and still be a complete story.
Characters In Romeo and Juliet
Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet. There are lots of characters in this play, but
the main ones are: Romeo. Juliet.
Other key characters include:
• Tybalt - Juliet's cousin.
• Mercutio - Romeo's close friend.
• Benvolio - Romeo's cousin.
• Capulet - Juliet's father.
Point of View
refers to who is telling or narrating a story. A story can be told in three different ways: first person,
second person, and third person. Writers use point of view to express the personal emotions of
either themselves or their characters
What is the point of Romeo and Juliet?
• It is a love which is all-absorbing, overmastering. It is a love which is literally unto death.
When Romeo and Juliet are laid in the tomb, the feud which, for so long a time had existed
between the Capulets and Montagues, is also buried in the same tomb. This is the theme of the
drama.
Conflict
Basically we can define conflict as a struggle between opposing forces - two characters, a character
and nature, or even an internal struggle - conflict provides a level of angst into a story that engages
the reader and makes him or her invested in finding out what happens.
The major conflict in Romeo and Juliet
is not between the two main characters, but between their families, the Montagues and the
Capulets. All of the other problems in the plot stem from this feud, and the two lovers must keep
their love a secret and go to great lengths to fight the greater forces against them.
Style, Tone, and Mood
The special language of a particular work of literature, the distinctive way in which a writer
expresses himself or herself, is what we mean when we speak of the writers style. An authors style
depends on diction, syntax, rhythm and imagery as well as experiments with litery form. All these
elements help to create the individual voices we hear in a work of prose or poetry.
Diction-is the word choice, the vocabulary that characterizes a speaker.
Syntax- grammar and sentence structure is closely related to diction, short simple words are often
connected to short, simple sentence patterns, pared down pose. At the other end of the spectrum
are the rich, metaphorical language and frequently complex sentence.
Imagery- the original, evocative and non literal use of language, is part of an authors repertoire.
Images convey feelings, ideas or sensory impressions with concrete pictures.
