RELATIVE CLAUSES MARISA VIESCA
There are two kinds of relative clauses: Defining Relative Clauses Non-Defining Relative Clauses
Defining Relative Clauses They give detailed information , defining a general term or expression. They are not put in commas . They are often used in definitions . Do you know the girl who is talking to Tom? (It is exactly that girl , not any girl).
NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES They are used to give extra information about the person o thing in the main clause. We put commas before and after the clause. This construction is fairly formal and more common in written than in spoken English. Jim, who/whom we met yesterday , is very nice. ( extra information about Jim )
DON´T FORGET that… A relative clause starts with a relative pronoun. Relative pronouns do not vary for singular or plural , masculine or feminine .
RELATIVE PRONOUNS
Subject pronoun or object pronoun? If the relative pronoun is followed by a verb , the relative pronoun is a subject pronoun . Subject pronouns must always be used . If the relative pronoun is followed by a noun or pronoun , the relative pronoun is an object pronoun and it can be dropped in defining relative clauses , which are then called Contact Clauses . The book ( WHICH ) you bought yesterday O . pronoun
A relative adverb can be used instead of a relative pronoun plus preposition . This often makes the sentence easier to understand. This is the shop in which I bought my bike. -> This is the shop where I bought my bike. RELATIVE ADVERBS
