Research into the music
video industry
In this presentation I will carry out research into the music industry
showing my knowledge and understanding of how the music industry
works.
By Daniella Benson
How are music videos generally made?
Music videos are made differently depending on their type. For
instance, narrative videos are complex which involves a concept that
needs to be thought up y a writer or creative director. However the
narrative will need to correspond with the song itself.
Performance videos on the other hand , are made with bands or artists
which either lip sync or play along to their music playing. Their songs
usually played through large speakers, allowing the artist to mimic the
song and play along.
Reasons for this is because:
1. They will dance a lot. An artist cant dance, jump and sing at the
same time as there is no way you can jump and dance and absorb
the bounce so your voice won't crack.
2. There are artists that get too anxious and even if they have great
voices, will not risk anything going wrong by singing live.
3. There are venues where the space is too small to accommodate the
whole band, so they use backing tracks
What are the stages of Video Production?
Every successful video production is divided into 3
stages.
Whether you are considering a product video, testimonial
video, training video, vlog or a video that showcases your
products or services, there are 3 stages of video
production that need to take place;
• Pre Production
• Production
• Post Production
What are the stages of Video Production?
The purpose of music videos?
*The purpose of music videos is to help the promotion of an artists new single and to show the
artists creativity qualities.
*It is also done to sell the track and let people see what the songs about. The audience can also find
out some things about the artist through the music video.
*In my opinion, I think one of the main factors of the purpose of music videos is so that audiences
have something to remember. Something iconic that happened in a music video or similar, so songs
can be recognised by there iconic music video, for example Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ video would
be nothing without the video, when people think of that, they remember it for the video, not the
song itself, they remember the iconic dance moves and the strange goings on that led it to be an
iconic piece of music video history.
Artists make music videos to make themselves known to the public, so that they can show off their
dancing talents and all of their talents overall. They also make them, because they know that their
song isn’t going to sell on it’s own, audiences these days feel they need something to look at whilst
listening to music, which music videos are needed for. Companies get involved so they can make
money and also make a name for themselves to become more noticeable music video producers.
How can audience members access music
videos?
Music videos are watched everyday by thousands of people all over the
world. The videos are accessible through the uses of radio station channels,
TV music channels, online websites such as YouTube or sound cloud,
institutional software such as ITunes and live performances from the artists
themselves. An example of radio stations are:
• MTV
• Smash Hits
• Kiss
• Magic
• And many others.
