Introduction
Research implies the study &
exploring of knowledge to get
new ideas. Rescarch
methodology is a way of solving
the research problem
systematically. Research
Method & Research
Methodology. These are two
different but related terms.
Research Method is a part of
Research methodology.
The research design depends
upon some common design
questions like what to
study, why to study. where to
study & what type of data is
required. The need is to
3
follow the systematic step by-
step approach to solve a
research problem.
Research
Research in common parlance
refers to a search for
knowledge. Once can also
define research as a scientific
and systematic search for
pertinent information on a
specific topic. In fact, research
is an art of scientific
investigation.
According to "Clifford
Woody" research comprises
defining and redefining
problems, formulating
hypothesis or suggested
4
solutions; collecting, organizing
and
evaluating data: making
deductions and reaching
conclusions: and at last
carefully
testing the conclusions to
determine whether they fit the
formulating hypothesis.
The term 'research' refers to
the systematic method
consisting of enunciating the
problem, formulating a
hypothesis, collecting the facts
or data, analyzing the facts
and reaching certain
conclusions either in the form
of solutions(s) towards the
5
concerned problem or in
certain generalizations for
some theoretical formulation.
Objectives
Scope Of Research
The scope of research contains a
search for understanding the
physical, and sometimes
psychological universe. This advances
into applying scientific methods to
refine the basic understanding and
evolving new techniques to apply the
facts that have been revealed and to
create different techniques and
materials. Some research is directed
to creating new useful stuff, and some
is just to understand how things can
be created or even deconstructed.
Lots of research is beneficial, and
much is meaningless except for the
sheer pleasure of understanding how
6
things work. Engineering is the
application of science and much
research is synonymous with
engineering.
Application Of Research In
Geography
●Explores a full range of contemporary
geographic techniques, including
statistics, mathematical analysis, GIS,
and remote sensing
●Unique in both content and
organization, it brings together a team
of internationally recognized specialists
to create a balanced approach between
physical geography, human
geography, and research techniques
●Includes a series of foundational
chapters offering multiple perspectives
on the central questions in research
methods
7
●Examines the conceptual frameworks
and practical issues behind data
acquisition and analysis, and how to
interpret results
●Includes explanations of key
terminology and exercises throughout
