CAREER OBJECTIVES
I entered the nursing profession as a young trainee with a genuine wish to care for persons
suffering from ill health. Through the course of my professional career I have had many
experiences which have confirmed for me that I made the right career choice.
I trained in England, including at Princess Mary’s Royal Air Force Nursing Service, which
provides an extremely professional and rigorous training.
I have had a very varied career, including being a ward nurse, a ward co-ordinator, palliative
carer, burns speciality, intensive/critical care nurse, continence advisor, gynaecological
nurse, grief counsellor, flight nurse and surgical nurse.
More recently I have specialised in aged care, with some dementia specific aspects. I have
found this to be an area where skills I have gained through the course of my career can be
put to good use, and where I am able to make a difference to both the physical and mental
wellbeing of my clients on a daily basis.
Through the course of my career I have also been involved in the mentoring and training of
students, as well as newly enrolled or registered nurses.
I believe that a critical aspect of nursing is communication with patients and their family,
ensuring that they are well informed and provided with a safe and supportive environment
to learn about and come to terms with their medical diagnoses. I have assisted people, and
their families, to come to terms with many varied chronic illnesses, such as dementia,
asthma, COAD, asbestosis, mesothelioma, diabetes and continence.
I am passionate about the standard of care nurses give to clients. The experience a patient
and their family undergo whilst in a health care environment can be life altering and nursing
staff have the ability to make a lasting difference to the patients, and their families,
experience.
