Introduction • In this era, vast amount of information is creating with the time in the form of print or digital. • In some time it create a problem to retrieve the particular information from the Information source. • when we search in Google it gives many result, some are relevant and some are not relevant. • So, there is some search and retrieval technique that is used to retrieve the information that we want from the domain or information source • According to Lancaster:- Search and Retrieval Strategy is the one component of the Information storage and retrieval System 5/17/2019 2

- 4. Formulation and Identify the key concept 1. First decide what we want and construct in the form of question and the question has: • clear objective (Main Focus on) • neither too specific and too broad 2. Then, identify the main concept in the question and highlight it. • For example:- For this presentation “What are the different type of technique used to search and retrieve the information on the database?” 5/17/2019 4

Conti.. • Developed the search term by using the keyword, phrase, synonyms, controlled vocabulary that express and reflect to the main concept • For example: Searching technique, Wild card, catalogue, OPAC, Information storage and retrieval system and technique. • There are some search model that help to identify the concept of the research question such as: • PICO - Population/patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome :- It is mostly used medical science field • SPIDER - Sample, Phenomenon of Interest, Design, Evaluation, Research type, and • SPICE - Setting, Perspective, Intervention, Comparison, Evaluation :- for qualitative research studies 5/17/2019 5

Select relevant database and resource • After contracting the search terms, It is most important to search the term with appropriate search field. • The search field is vary from database to database. • Every database has the help function option where we can get the appropriate search filed used in that database. • Database like PUBMED, Library Catalog, Web of Science, Scopus, and much more. 5/17/2019 6

Search technique • There are two main class of searches: • Known item search : user know about the item such as author, title, ISBN, and so on. • Unknown item search: user unknown/ not aware about the item • Type of search technique • Basic Search :- phrase, keyword search, and subject search 5/17/2019 7

Conti… Truncation Search • It is also know as Wildcard search, Term masking, Stemming etc.. • There are two commonly used wild card for truncation search that is asterisk “*” and question mark “?” • * can be used when having the same common root/characters that give all the possible result {educat* (education, educated, educator, etc..} • ? Proximity Search • It help to search the two or more terms that appear closely to each other • IT is useful for express the result in multiple different phrases • Proximity operators are composed • letter (N or W) or • Word (NEAR) or • FBY (Followed BY) and • Number (to specify the number of words appearing between your search terms) • For example:- Library N3 traditional library (it searches the library within the traditional library) 5/17/2019 11

- 14. Conti… Range Search • It is mostly used in Numerical searching • Operator used for range searching are as :- • Greater than (>) • Less than (<) • Not equal to (1=or < >) • Greater than or equal to (>=) • Less than or equal to (<=) 5/17/2019 14

Conti… Fuzzy Search and Weighted Search • Fuzzy search similar to the transaction search but there is one difference between truncation and fuzzy search • Fuzzy search find that result which are spelled incorrectly in the query place or entry place • Weighted search used to give the higher value in search result • It is based on the frequency of the search terms • It is mostly used in discovery Tool or federated tool 5/17/2019 16
