HARD COPY DEVICES
• Also called as output device.
• Output Device:
Following are Output Devices:
1.Printers
2.Plotters
PRINTERS:
• Used to print data on paper
• Types of printers:
2
Types of Printers:
3
1.IMPACT PRINTERS:
• Impact Printers:
The printers that print the characters by striking against the
ribbon and onto the papers are known as Impact Printers.
• These Printers are of two types:
1. Character Printers
2. Line Printers
4
Character Printer Type-Dot Matrix Printers:
• Dot matrix has printed in the form of dots.
• Also called as serial printer or character printer.
prints one character at a time
• Two Modes:
ON MODE: Release all the OFF MODE:Hold all the seven pins
Seven needle to print a inside the print head.
Character onto the paper.
5
Print Head:
• Produce an image or character on a paper using seven pins called
print head that hits the paper.
• It consists of columns of small seven needles, each needle can move
freely
• Each needle can be handled by hammer action.
• Uses of Hammer Action:
It is used to force the needle to come out and print the
character onto the paper.
6
• Standard characters are produced by 5* 7 dot matrix
• It has 18 needles,9 needles,24 needles and 7 needles.
7
PRINT HEAD
8
Advantages & Disadvantages:
Advantages:
• Text can be printed
• Low cost
• Multiple copies are possible
Disadvantages:
• Very slow operation
• Quality of image printing is poor
9
Line Printer Type -DrumPrinters:
• These are line printers, which prints one line at a time.
• It consists of a drum.
• The shape of the drum is cylindrical. The drum is solid and has characters
embossed on it in the form of vertical bands.
• The characters are in circular form.
• Each band consistsof some characters. Each line on drum consists of 132
characters.
• Because there are 96 lines so total characters are (132 * 95) = 12, 672.
• Drum contains a number of hammers also.
10
Line Printer Type -Chain Printers:
• used to print one line at a line.
• Basically, chain consists of links.
• Each link contains one character.
• Printers can follow any character set style, i.e., 48, 64 or 96
characters.
• Printer consists of a number of hammers also.
11
CHAIN PRINTER AND DRUM PRINTER
12
Advantages & Disadvantages-Line printers:
• Advantages:
❖Chain or Band if damaged can be changed easily.
❖It allows printing of different form.
❖Different Scripts can be printed using this printer.
• Disadvantages:
❖It cannot print charts and graphs.
❖It cannot print characters of any shape.
❖Chain Printers is impact printer, hammer strikes so it is noisy
13
NON-IMPACT PRINTERS:
2. Non-Impact Printers:
• The printers that print the characters without striking against the
ribbon and onto the papers are called Non-Impact Printers.
• print a complete page at a time, therefore, also known as Page
Printers.
• Page Printers are of two types:
1. Laser Printers
2. Inkjet Printers
14
LASERPRINTER
• Non-impact page printers.
• use laser lights to produces the dots needed to form the characters to
be printed on a page.
• It is made up of selenium, that drum contain the electric charged to
expose the light.
15
LASERPRINTER
16
The output is generated in the following steps:
• Step1:The drum is initially charged before exposing the laser beam or
light
• Step2: A laser beam is used to scan the drum by using mirror.
• Step3:after scanning that drum, character of images is to be printed
onto the drum.
• Step4:The toner is spread over the surface to forms a ink image
• Step5:The image of the drum is transferred to the paper and made
permanent by heating.
• Step6:The drum rotates back to the cleaner where a rubber blade
cleans off the excess ink & prepares the drum to print the next page.
17
Advantages & Disadvantages:
• Advantages:
❖ Quality of printing is good
❖ High speed
• Disadvantages:
❖ High cost
❖ Multiple copies are not possible
18
INKJET PRINTER
• Forms the character by spraying a small ink droplets on the paper
• The output is generated in the following steps:
# The ink from the tank is pumped through the nozzle or hole.
# Then the drop is guided to proper position to form a character on
the paper by electrically charged deflection plate.
# Then the drop is not necessary for a particular character,it is
placed in recycle ink tank.
# Later send back to ink tank.
• It is used to take 2 to 4 pages per minutes.
19
INKJET PRINTER
20
Advantages & Disadvantages:
Advantages:
• Color specification CYMK
• High quality of printing
• Low cost
• Color printing is possible
Disadvantages:
• slow speed
• Multiple copies are not possible
21
ELECTROSTATIC PRINTER
• It is positive charge.
• Toner is negative charge.
Produce output on the paper.
• Place a negative charge on the paper, then paper is exposed with
toner.
• Toner is positive charge.
It has RGB color mode .
22
ELECTROSTATIC PRINTER
• Apply the color for the specified image by using the rotating mirror
• It attracts the –ve charge area .
• finally it produce image on the paper.
23
24
25
ELECTROTHERMAL PRINTER
• Use heat in a print head to produce o/p pattern by using the heat
sensitive paper .
• Uses black and other color .
26
PLOTTERS
• Plotters are a special type of output device.
• It is suitable for applications:
• Architectural plan of the building.
• CAD applications like the design of mechanical componentsof aircraft.
• Many engineering applications.
27
PLOTTERS
28
• Types of Plotters:
1.Drum Plotter
2.Flatbed Plotter
1.DrumPlotter
• It consists of a drum.
• Paper on which design is made is kept on the drum.
• The drum can rotate in both directions.
• Plotters comprised of one or more pen and penholders.
• The holders are mounted perpendicular to drum surface.
• The pens are kept in the holder, which can move left to the right as
well as right to the left.
• The graph plotting program controls the movement of pen and drum.
29
Drum
Plotter
30
2.Flatbed Plotter
• It is used to draw complex design and graphs, charts.
• The Flatbed plotter can be kept over the table.
• The plotter consists of pen and holder. The pen can draw characters
of various sizes.
• There can be one or more pens and pen holding mechanism.
• Each pen has ink of different color.
• Different colors help to produce multicolor design of document.
31

32
FLATBED PLOTTER
• It is used to draw
❑Cars
❑Ships
❑Airplanes
❑Shoe and dress designing
❑Road and highway design
33
GRAPHICS SOFTWARE:
34
GRAPHICS SOFTWARE
• There are two types of Graphics Software.
1. General Purpose Packages:
• Basic Functions in a general package include:
1. for generating picture components (straight lines, polygons,
circles and other figures)
2.setting color and intensity values, selecting views, and
applying transformations.
• Example of general purpose package :I
GL (Graphics Library), GKS, PHIGS, PHIGS+ etc.
35
GRAPHICS SOFTWARE
2. Special Purpose Packages: These packages are designed for non
programmers,
so that these users can use the graphics packages, without knowing the
inner details.
• Example of special purpose package is
❖Painting programs
❖Package used for business purpose
❖Package used for medical systems.
❖CAD packages
