Richard Aldington was a British poet and novelist born in 1892 in Portsmouth, Hampshire. He was educated at Dover College and University of London, and by age 19 could read multiple languages fluently. Aldington launched his poetic career at a young age, publishing his first volume of poems at 17. In 1911 he met and later married the American poet H.D. Aldington saw action in the trenches during World War I, which left him with neurasthenia. He published several volumes of poetry and novels about the war experience, finding success but also bitterness. Aldington spent time in France and Italy before moving to the U.S. during World War II, where he continued writing until his death in 1960
