Role of Community in
Inclusive Education

COMMUNITY
The word ‘community’ is derived
from two words ‘Com’ and
‘Munis’. ‘Com’ means togetherness
and ‘Munis’ signifies to serve. It
means ‘to serve together’. It is a
group of people living in the same
region having common ideals and
sharing common views and
experiences.
Community is a social entity made of people or
families who have the following characteristics:
Live in the same geographical area
Share common goals or problems
Share similar development aspirations
Have similar interest or social network or
relationships at local level
Share some resources – water, school etc.
Are sociologically and psychologically linked
Role of Community in Inclusive Education
Creating Positive attitudes of
parents and teachers towards
children rights
Organizing extension lectures by
experts in schools
Arranging funds for the school
Providing facilities for medical
checkups
Involving government and non-
government organizations and
associations to work for the uplift of
disabled children
Linking and bridging the gap
between special schools and
inclusive educational practices
The community can help in
eliminating negative attitudes,
prejudice, assumptions and
stereotypes which are the common
barrier to create an inclusive school
The community can provide human
resources to meet the needs of inclusive
schools to embrace diversity and cherish
differences, may be in the form of guest
teachers and resource persons to teach local
stories, poems, folklore and materials to
represent the diverse culture and language of
communities to which the learners belong.
This can build a sense of recognition among
the children and enable them to relate the
instruction given in such classes
The assistance provided by the
community in terms of controlling
illness and hunger etc., among
marginalized and under-privileged
students ensure the smooth
implementation of inclusion in the
school
