Rotary Doing Good in the World - a presentation for Bolton University 18 June 2014

- 2. Raising Awareness ofRotary Rotary - The beginning Doing Good in the World It all began in 1905 when Paul Harris, a Chicago Attorney, formed the Rotary Club of Chicago where professionals from diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful and lifelong relationships

Raising Awareness ofRotary Rotary - The beginning Doing Good in the World it wasn’t long before the Club decided to include Charitable work in their activities and amongst the first project was the provision of public toilets in downtown Chicago. Rotary’s impact on Health and Wellbeing is well grounded.

Raising Awareness ofRotary We encourage and foster the ideal of service; – Friendship as an opportunity for service; – High ethical standards in business and professions; – The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s life; Doing Good in the World Rotary is based on a number of basic principles including the “Ideal of Service”

- 12. Supporting Health &Well Being Doing Good in the World We started this work in 1984 and with many partners including the Gates Foundation we are close to finishing the job
- 13. Supporting Health &Well Being Feb 2010 Bangalore Doing Good in the World Rotarian throughout the world have been involved in awareness raising
- 14. Raising Awareness ofPolio October 2013 Doing Good in the World We have also raised funds for the campaign and have helped immunise more the 2 billion children in 122 countries
- 15. Raising Awareness ofPolio World Polio Day 24th October 2013 Doing Good in the World We engage with our local communities to help us wherever we can

Rotary Doing Goodin Communities Economic / Community Development Doing Good in the World Coffee growers in Coche, Ethiopia are part of a Micro credit scheme developed by the Rotary Club of Keswick. It helps them become more independent and has encouraged the development of Fair-trade status for their crops
- 19. Rotary Doing Goodin Communities Education & Literacy Doing Good in the World A School bus for disabled Children in Mangalore Rotarians in Mysore run this school in the city Children in a rural school in Cumbria, England receive First Aid and CPR training as part of a Rotary funded project.
- 20. Rotary Doing Goodin Communities Healthy Mothers & Children Doing Good in the World Children get a simple check up and health advice and mothers get the opportunity for post natal care
- 21. Rotary Doing Goodin Communities “Water from Eden” in Mali - Before Doing Good in the World The provision of accessible, potable, water is critical issue in many areas of the world
- 22. Rotary Doing Goodin Communities “Water from Eden” in Mali - After Doing Good in the World Rotarians working together across continents can bring fresh water from a tap
- 23. Rotary Doing Goodin Communities Sanitation in Eshowe Doing Good in the World We can also provide improved sanitation to schools allowing children, especially girls, to attend school without embarrassment on a regular basis
- 24. Rotary Doing Goodin Communities Health Centres and Camps Doing Good in the WorldIn India many clubs fund and run a wide range of health clinics and in the NW of England we are increasingly holding Community Health Fairs (Melas) to encourage people to have a ”check up”
- 25. Rotary Doing Goodin Communities Peace and Reconciliation Doing Good in the World Rotary International is a member of the UNESCO and was instrumental in helping set up the UN in the first place. We now have a number of universities around the world providing Rotary funded Peace Fellowships, adding to a growing number of activists for Peace throughout the world.
- 27. Rotary in YourCommunity Doing Good in the World We pride ourselves in being for our Communities and are striving to be fully representative of the Communities within which we live, work and play.

Rotary Doing Goodin Communities August 2013 Doing Good in the World In June 2014, District 1190 were successful in obtaining grant from our Rotary Foundation to support the provision of Community based Defibrillators. The project also included funding for equipment for our Search & Rescue Teams
- 29. Rotary Doing Goodin Communities Community Health Mela’s / Fairs We are also going to increase the number of Community Health Melas / Fairs in some of the more deprived areas of our region

Our Rotary Foundation •Helps fund our humanitarian activities, from local service projects to global initiatives. • Leads the charge on worldwide Rotary campaigns such as eradicating polio and promoting peace. • Rotarians and friends of Rotary support the Foundation’s work through voluntary contributions.
