• A small hamlet in the Kuanrmunda estate. The name of villages ended with ‘Kela’ , similar to ‘pura’ or
‘shasan’.
• Messers Bird & Co., Calcutta had planned for an Iron & Steel Industry (Steel Corporation of India), due to
high grade iron-ore deposits in the region.
• Among all the choices the availability of water from Brahmani river and the presence of Railway Station on
the Bengal- Nagpur Railway route made it a suitable choice.

• Rourkela being a Steel City and a major commercial hub of Odisha, there are people from various corners
from the country. The major part of the population constitutes people from Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand
and the local tribal population (Santal, Rauli).
• The German Colony at Sector-9 was established for the German nationals who came to establish the Steel
Plant, a German Club was also built at Sector-2. Yet, now the colony is no more inhabited by them except
when some Germans come for a short period.
• The local tribal people have integrated into the modern society over the past few years while upholding
their cultural and social practices.

    • Rourkela beinga Steel City and a major commercial hub of Odisha, there are people from various corners from the country. The major part of the population constitutes people from Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand and the local tribal population (Santal, Rauli). • The German Colony at Sector-9 was established for the German nationals who came to establish the Steel Plant, a German Club was also built at Sector-2. Yet, now the colony is no more inhabited by them except when some Germans come for a short period. • The local tribal people have integrated into the modern society over the past few years while upholding their cultural and social practices.
