Rural Tourism in India
India the land of Villages - “To know the culture,
tradition and lifestyle of any Indian state travel
to and stay in villages”. Indian villages are
treasure houses of culture, tradition, colorful
events and nature at its best. Each village,
hamlet in Indian states are differ in their culture,
customs and calendar of events.
Any form of tourism that showcases the rural
life, art, culture and heritage at rural
locations, thereby benefiting the local
community economically and socially as well
as enabling interaction between the tourists
and the locals for a more enriching tourism
experience can be termed as rural tourism.
Definition of Rural Tourism
Rural tourism has certain typical
characteristics like;
1. It is experience oriented.
2. The locations are sparsely populated.
3. It is predominantly in natural environment.
4. It meshes with seasonality and local events
and is based on preservation of culture,
heritage and traditions.
5. The primary attraction is rural culture.
Rural Tourism Resources in India
1. Agriculture.
2. Heritage- Culture, tradition, customs, folk arts.

1. Staying in rural village houses, Tents and
Huts
2. Working in agricultural fields

Positive impacts of Rural Tourism
1. Economic benefits
2. contributes for the Growth and preserving
industries, handicrafts and souvenir
3. Allocation of responsibilities and revenue
4. Over dependence on agriculture will reduce.
5. Socio-cultural benefits
6. Demands investments in developing
infrastructure
Negative Impacts of Rural Tourism
1. Tourism resources in rural areas are extremely
provisional and seasonal.
2. May be resulted in price increment.
3. chance of abusing host community culture and
cultural pollution.
4. Over use of resources and local facilities would cause
to be polluted and destructed.
5. Exploitation of local population in the name of
Tourism.
6. Inactive participation of local people.
7. Over use of water may cause scarcity of water in the
summer.
8. Construction of infrastructure , improper method of
waste management are causing environmental
pollution and disturbance on ecology.
9. Sexual harassments on local women’s, drug addiction
by local youths.
Challenges
1. The major challenges to conduct rural tourism
are preservation and protection of environment,
natural resources and local culture.
2. Problems related to law, land use.
3. Lack of Trained Manpower in Tourism industry.
4. Poor infrastructure and insufficient financial
support.
5. Lack of local people involvement and
participation in tourism activities.
6. Illiteracy level of local population.
7. Language barriers.
Recommendations
1. Active participation of Governments in policy making
and implementation.
2. Necessity of creating awareness in local people about
the importance of rural tourism and its benefits.
3. Educating tourists by providing guidelines on their
responsibilities.
4. Build confidence in safety and security.
5. Plan for sustainable growth of rural tourism by
following certain mitigating measures like
Environmental Impact Assessment.
6. Business must balance economics with people,
culture and environment.
7. Develop rural tourism protecting natural resources,
local heritage and lifestyles.
8. Promote traditional tourism products.
9. Giving quality standards of services at all levels.
10. Develop and deploy skills effectively.
