Crisis
All you Need to Know
Russia Ukraine crisis
• Russia and Ukraine share a very long history; both the countries have very similar cultures
and traits which can be seen by their people's way of life.
• The territory of Ukraine was also part of the Russian empire during Tsar Peter the Great.
Ukraine was the second most constituent of the erstwhile Soviet Union (USSR).
• Ukraine SSR was very important for the Soviet Union because of its position providing access
to the Black sea through Crimea After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine
declared itself as an independent country.
• Ukraine slowly and steadily opened up itself to western countries for developing its
economy. Russia for many years still influenced Ukraine's politics because of its sphere of
influence and elite Ukrainian establishment that shared history with the USSR.
• Viktor Yanukovych became Ukraine's President in 2010. He tried signing an economic treaty
with the European Union which was failed. Russia was already concerned with the number of
eastern European countries and ex-soviet countries joining European Union and NATO.
• Russia invaded Crimea in 2014 and supported a separatist movement in eastern Ukraine in
the regions of Luhansk and Donetsk.
West
Perspectiv
e
• After the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, Western countries led by
the US put economic sanctions on Russia, and tensions between the east and
west increased.
• The demands which are put forward by the Russian side are perceived by the
west as a threat and violation of Ukrainian territorial integrity and
sovereignty.
• NATO has stated that it has no intention of threatening Russia and nobody
can stop Ukraine from taking decisions to join any organization they want.
• President Biden has already warned Putin that the aggression will only
create problems for Moscow and has requested for deescalating the situation.
War OR Peace?
Recently French President Emmanuel
Macron said there can be a peaceful
solution if there is revisit to the
Minsk 2 agreement which was signed
by Russia, Ukraine, Germany, and
France after the Crimea situation
where there was an agreement by
Ukraine and Russia to remove troops
and allow the democratic process to
take place in the separatist regions
of Ukraine.
Even after two world wars if the leaders of the west and east
cannot solve these issues diplomatically it will be the
failure of the post-war liberal institutional order.
All war is a symptom of man’s failure as a
thinking animal.
John Steinbeck
