South Australia Strategic Plan
Creating Opportunity
Minerals and Exploration Make South Australia a favoured mineral
investment destination for private investment by 2010, with exploration
expenditure targeted to almost treble to $100 million by 2007 and
mineral production and processing to reach $4 billion by 2020
Fostering Creativity
• Target 4.8 Cooperative Research Centres, Centres of Excellence
Centre for Mineral Exploration under Cover
Building Communities
• Target 5.11 Regional Infrastructure
Support and development in APY Lands
• Target 6.1 Aboriginal Wellbeing
Reduce the gap between the outcomes for South Australia’s Aboriginal
population and those of the rest of South Australia’s population
Geological Survey
Achieving the Strategic Targets
Change in Focus for the Geological Survey Branch
• Move to enhance prospectivity for Commodities: Au, Cu-Au, Pb-Zn, Ni
and PGE’s, diamonds, Iron Ore in SA
• Value adding to regional geophysical and
geochemical surveys (past and present)
• PHD and MSc work carried out by GSB
personnel
• Increasing use of expertise in the areas
of regolith, geophysics, geochemistry and
computer modelling
• Close interaction with pmd* CRC, GA
and CRC LEME
• Leveraging Government research money
through ARC grants with Adelaide and
Monash
Geological Survey
Beyond the Strategic Targets
Traditional Work
• Support for other Gov’t agencies
• Close interaction with Exploration groups-exchange of ideas
• Limited areas for regional mapping using a combined approach
of regolith, geological and structural mapping
• Compilation of exploration data
• Contributions to academic journals including MESA journal
• Collaboration with Geoscience Australia on craton wide studies
• Promotion of SA through PACE/TEISA, conferences and
workshops.

Pmd* CRC-Central Gawler Gold Project
Pmd* CRC - Central Gawler Gold Project
Features of known gold deposits
Deposit Characteristics
• 1680–1715 Ma granitoids (+ mafics + metasediments at
Tarcoola). Variety of hosts for most of the Au prospects
• Yarlbrinda Shear Zone hosts Tunkillia and Nuckulla Hill,
and marks W to E transition to more evolved crust
• Mafic dykes and fluid flow controlled by re-activated
deep-crustal structures?
• ‘Intrusion-related gold’ with alteration dated close to 1588Ma
Pmd* CRC - Central Gawler Gold Project
Aim of the Study
Our aim is to identify the factors that could produce a
high grade 5 million oz gold deposit in the Central Gawler
Gold Province
First, “reverse engineer” the known gold deposits to identify
thermal, structural and chemical controls on gold formation
Second, employ this understanding to make predictions about the
most favourable combinations of structure, thermal history
(including proximity to felsic intrusions either as heat or fluid
sources or both) and chemistry
