SATURATED REACTOR AND THYRISTOR
CONTROLLED REACTOR
Submitted By,
M. Pratheep ,
ICE – 4th Year ,
SCE, Trichy.
SATURATED REACTOR ( SR ) :
 Saturated reactor is used for controlling reactive power. It consist
of reactor and shunt capacitor bank.
 It is like a magnetic switch which control current during each
half cycle.
 It is also called as tapped reactor and it is single phase.
 It have multiple taps for varying the inductance according to the
requirements of loads.
SR - Circuit Diagram :
Saturated Reactor (SR) :
 When it get saturated further increase in current will not cause increase in magnetic
flux and when it became saturated, the reactor (inductor) losses its inductance property
and hence decrease in inductive reactance will allow increase in Ac current flow.
 Controlling element of saturated reactor is Saturable magnetic core. This can be
controlled directly or remotely.
 Controlling winding consists of DC and it is separated from AC power.
 Saturated Reactor is a magnetic amplifier.
Saturated Reactor (SR) :
 The relation between DC control volt amp and AC control volt amp is called
Amplification factor.
 V-I characteristic :
Advantage And Disadvantage :
 The advantage of saturated reactor is it low maintenance and performance at high
temperature.
 The disadvantage of saturated reactor is its slow response.
THYRISTOR CONTROLLED REACTOR (TCR)
• The controlled element is the reactor and the controlling element is the thyristor
controller consisting of two opposite poled thyristors which conduct every half cycle of
the supply frequency.
• Currently available thyristors can block voltage upto 4000-9000V and conduct current upto
3000-6000 A.
• Practically 10-20 thyristors are connected in series to meet the required blocking voltage .
TCR - Circuit Diagram :
V–I Characteristics Of TCR :
Thyristor Controlled Reactor :
 A thyristor controlled reactor is usually a three-phase assembly, normally connected
in a delta arrangement to provide partial cancellation of Harmonics.
 Often the main TCR reactor is split into two halves, with the thyristor valve
connected between the two halves.
 This protects the vulnerable thyristor valve from damage due to flashovers, lightning
strikes etc.
Thyristor Controlled Reactor :
 The thyristor valve is phase controlled which give reactive power according to
system requirements
 TCR can be used for limiting voltage rise on lightly loaded transmission line.
 The current in TCR is continuously vary from zero to maximum by phase
control.
