- #3: Welcome and thank you for coming out today. Why code, you may ask? It helps youth develop their logic and problem solving skills. - #4: Ask how many of them have used the website. To access the 4-H Project Achievement Days information and the scratch jr. curriculum we first go to http://4hrobotics.msucares.com/ From here one would select the contest tab then scroll down to the 4-H Project Achievement Days section Scratch Jr. can be found under the curriculum tab or by visiting http://www.scratchjr.org/.
- #5: Competitors in the 10 & 11 year old category will create a digital story using Scratch Jr. using an ocean theme. This story should be developed prior to the contest day and emailed to the State Specialist two days before the contest date and by 5 PM. Participants should be prepared to discuss their project with judges including key terms (start on green flag block, movement block, and the repeat or loop block). Contestants should create their story and capture screenshots of their Scratch Jr. story to incorporate into a PowerPoint presentation. Participants will be asked to develop a presentation in addition to their story created in Scratch Jr. It is important for 4-H youth to not only be able to code but also to discuss and explain what they have created to others. Participants will also prepare a 3-5 minute PowerPoint presentation on how they developed their Scratch Jr. stories. Participants should be prepared to show the judge their code and discuss terms such as: blocks, sequence, repeat, repeat forever, programming, programmer. Use this rubric to guide the creation of your presentation. To capture a screenshot of the youths story on iPads hold down the lock and home buttons. This screenshot will be located in the images apps, to share this image with to the device the youth are creating their presentation by emailing it to themselves. Use this rubric to guide the creation of your presentation. Participants may also reference the Best Foot Forward publication to help in the creation of their PowerPoint.
- #6: Scratch Jr is an introductory programming language that enables youth to create their own interactive stories and games. Programming is a process that solves a problem by writing a plan (program) using a series of commands and functions to be executed. Youth snap together graphical programming blocks to make characters move, jump, dance, and sing. ScratchJr is available as a free app for both iPad and Android tablets. Now there is also the opportunity to download Scratch Jr, on Kindles. Programing and coding are often used interchangeably but there is a difference. Would anyone like to tell me what they think programing is? Programming is a process that solves a problem by writing a plan (program) using a series of commands and functions to be executed. While coding is using or modifying a set of instructions for a computer. An algorithm is a list of steps that you can follow to finish a task. The creators are still in the early planning stages for a Web version. Can I share a ScratchJr project from one tablet to another? If you are running ScratchJr version 1.0.3 or greater on the iPad, you can share projects via email or AirDrop. To access the sharing options, go to the Project Information page by tapping on the yellow button in the top-right corner of the ScratchJr editor.
- #8: We are going to be completing 4 hands-on-activities from the teach section of sratchjr.org and if we have enough time you will have the opportunity to create your own stories. You can save the stories that have been created by clicking house in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. Show what they did. Challenge them to add a block not on the page.
- #13: Using the ocean theme or background to create your own story. Youth can also add their own images or augment a character by selecting the character, clicking the paint brush next to it, select the part to be changed, click the camera on the lower right side of the screen (number eleven on the paint editor guide), and replace the selection with the photo.
